Home Exercises?

Well seeing as i'm doing back exercises (Re : Back exercise thread ) I thought I'd give the whole fitness thing a go, I do push ups., sit ups and go for a long cycle, Thats it really!, So about time I did some real exercise! :giggle:

I can't afford a gym membership, So doing the next best thing which is home exercises.

I've found some great exercise videos on youtube ie.youtube.com/wat…mqc Like this one , I've tried some of them and they're brilliant.

I bought a Body bow for £6 recently :

ec1.images-amazon.com/ima…jpg

Its ok, But the resistance isn't that high, But any exercise is better than no exercise (And it came with a dvd of about 20 odd), Its worth £6 anyway.

Also got these :

gungfu.com/pic…jpg

The idea of this thread was for some more great links, Comments on the best exercises and the best home equipment (Bearing in mind I can't fit in a huge mulitgym and i'm on a small budget!)

Are those exercise/Gym balls any good?, Have you got any tips/tricks?, Cheers! IOM..

Hmm, I always hated swimming, I'd always end up choking to death in the pool and then here a lovely story about someone taking a leak in the pool................:x

I haven't actually swam for around 3 years, I could swim, But i'd always develop the knack of swimming and intaking half the water!!, Hence why i'd cough/splutter and feel ill!

I'd probably swim if I had a private Gym membership though, But as said, Lack of monies.

Any other tips/tricks for the home?

I do 30 minutes a day on my boots stepper, while using weights at the same time.
boots.com/sho…622

Then do 20 minutes general aerobics, my own little routine from things I have picked up watching 100s of exercise vids, again do this holding/using weights.

I'm no expert, but it works for me

like to show us the results??LOL

I have someit like this...great piece of kit...can get a decent one for about £70 with that golfing outlet that are often on here

Swimming is especially good for bad backs!! (due to there being less weight on the spine whilst in the water).
Jogging - just get some decent running shoes though or if you have a bike go for a cycle.
If you just want suggestions of things to do in the house maybe pick-up some exercise equipment second hand - tends to go quite cheaply on Ebay if its pick up only (like £15). A simple rowing machine should slide under a bed.....

Thanks for the ideas, Only problem with buying equipment from the internet is getting it to the Isle of Man, Often they'll slap an extra £15-20 on what is already expensive postage!

Pushups are always good, plus you can mix them up a little, narrow placing between hands (just under chest and angled out a little) - for triceps. Or you can rest your feet on a box, moving the focus more to the shoulders (the greater the angle, the more on shoulders/delts).

Increase the speed, with say a rest of a few minutes in between, turns into a little bit of cardio. Then there's one handed etc ..

Edit - Also meant to add, for lower body stuff, there's always Hindu Squats too. No real need for equipment !

Use stuff you find around the home - e.g. step ups on stairs (just use the bottom stair or walk up and down all of them) use tins of beans or something as weights etc

Can be just as effective, doesnt cost a thing and doesnt require storage!

No-one has mentioned the obvious...:?

Sexercise! :whistling: :-D

Try the tv remote control, press the change channel button five times within a minute and you should find yourself out of breath, always the sign of a good exercise if you ask me. Good God all that typing has worn me out, now where did I put my cig's.

One handed pull-ups...

You won't get any fitter, but you'll feel more relaxed.

Sounds like a sewing exercise if you ask me:? suggest you try crochet.

My goal?

Well i'm not fat at the moment, But i'm definetly unhealthy, So i'm eating healthy stuff and doing a bit of exercise.

I'm not really aiming towards anything, Its something I need to do (some exercise is better than nothing!!).

As for crochet, The lawn isn't big enough!

Crochets! I haven't had them for AGES! Nice with a piece of steak, peas and pepper sauce!

If you have stairs, someone else has said use these as a stepper. Or, what you could do to train and maybe give you something to think about whilst doing it, is step up on the first step, then step down, then step up on the first step, then the second, then step back down to the first one, then off, then repeat til you get to the top! Doesn't sound too difficult, but can be! I found it nearly killed me! I can't count past 7!

Other things that have been mentioned are good ideas, such as using what is in your house.

But don't forget to warm up and warm down!

Also don't forget your bicep curls! I find a short walk to your nearest pub, followed by sips of your favourite tipple in timed intervals can help your biceps! Make sure you switch hands every so often so you don't get one arm to be massive, and the other not! This could be done by other means, but I'm not going to go down the smutty route!

Crochet! leave it to the experts !http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/knit.gif;-)

Just a quick update, Being doing this for around 1 month (came off my bike and injured my wrist, So didn't do much for a week), I've now got noticeable muscle, More Biceps/triceps than anything else, But I'm feeling a lot healthier (Eating a lot healthier does help!), Stuff is just a lot easy to carry, Shopping doesn't weigh that much at all, Can carry at least 3 full carrier bags per arm!!, Woo!

Pilates is good,my partner got a bad back and he always gets told about pilates,he's had a few books and dvds on it but doesn't seem to get the time to like get in routine of doing it.

Haven't really got room for a pull up bar at home (not without hitting my head on the ceiling!), But when I used to use the school gym (which wasn't very often! :giggle: ), The pulls where not only the easiest/quickest, But also one of the better exercises!

i can do loads of stuff whilst not tripping over 2 cats, in fact i have never tripped over 2 cats, and ive done more than just carry a 2 year old and chat about food

If you want exercise equipment without spending sign up to you local freecycle site, completely free and because its seperated by region then collecting the item is normally very easy, or they might even bring it round to you. (think its www.freecycle.org). Just request something and hope someone has one they need to stop cluttering up their house with. And if it doesnt work well for you, then stick it back on freecycle and let someone else have it (i got an airwalker from freecycle which works very well for me as i cant do high impact exercise, but does help to keep my mobility higher than usual. NOt the best piece of equipment if you're wanting real results but works well for me!)

Thanks very much Littlemissmanics, Just signed up to my local freecycle!

Rep added, Thanks again

I bought my brother one of those ]BBE Punchman freestanding punchbags for Christmas (Got him a ]Slam-Man first but he punched the face off). It's great to get you moving and you feel like your doing something productive (and fun) so it's easy to stick with.

Since he started doing that, light weights and buying healthy choice snacks from M&S so he doesn't over-eat he's lost weight and really toned up. Suprised me really as he used to be a bit of a porker. :giggle:

I have an exercise bike at home that I like to sit on, and thats about it, I just sit there listening to music, no point wasting any energy pedalling :giggle:
