    home insurance incresed excess

can anyone tell me if this is correct.
I rang my insurance company regarding damage to the roof of my house but as I was unable to give the exact date /day of the event (didnt notice until the water was pouring in the bedroom) they told me I could not claim as there had been no gale force storms which they consider strong enough to cause any damage in my area.
I had the roof repaired and paid the cost.
however they have now put my excess up from £50 to £250 because they say I am more likely to claim of them as I have had a loss???
I did not claim I only enquired and they told me no. I do however want to make a claim for the internal damage caused by the water but they say I have to pay the first £250!!

can they do this? I am not a serial claimer I have only ever claimed once for my freezer which defrosted whilst I was away on hols. Been with this company for four years. will not be staying there after this year though.

i understand that what i'm interested in is why they wont pay for the problem

because if you have a problem with the roof, i.e. tile off, if the has been no storm they will not pay out. (anyone can remove a tile I suppose) I accepted that and paid for the roof repair myself, however, I dont understand why they have put £250 excess on my policy. they say it is because I am now what they consider an increased risk customer.:w00t:

    what insurance company is it?
if the roof damage has been declined under the wear and tear exclusion its likely that the internal damage will also be declined as well. they shouldnt be increasing your excess unless you renewed whilst this was on going if they have i would presume you have rights to cancel your agreement and go elsewhere as they have changed the terms of your insurance

I would have expected my policy cost to rise if I had claimed, but thats not the case. are they allowed to pile on an excess like this just because I asked a question on the phone - no claim forms were sent to me or filled in it was just a telephone conversation.

Its lloydstsb, the internal damage is covered as it is water damage, but it is not worth me claiming if I have to pay first £250. its not my fault I did not know the exact date the tile came off.

they are putting this penalty on me for what!!

I always say "no I don't want to give you my details" when I enquire, but that was tesco car insurance lesson learnt, but just ring them back and tell them you are cancelling because they have changed the terms and conditions of your contract.

already have and intend to but I still want to claim for the internal damage. what is the point of paying insurance if they can get away with putting up the excess when they like! :x

You won't be able to claim for the damage if you leave them no, and there maybe a penalty if you claim then leave. I'm not a professional btw just opinion you should read the terms and conditions of your contract to know your rights though, or even go to a solicitor. You may even have free legal advice with your contract insurance?
