home remedy for getting rid of heartburn & acid

ok to cut a long story short , ive got Pneumonia AGAIN, found this out after spending 9 hours sitting in the medical assessment unit at my hospital on Sunday , spent the entire time in the visitors waiting room as they had no beds, should have had treatment but again they didnt have beds, so they sent me home with 2 sets of antibiotics and more steroids for the next two weeks then see the specialist,
Now the problem ive got is one of the tablets is causing really bad heartburn and acid and on the leaflets they all say do not take antacids
its really bad now cos if i cough, sneeze or burp is causing the pain to get worse in my lungs,
what do you guys use as home remedies ??

Fennel tea or aniseed balls or pernod straight

have you got a heat pad.......that helps too, if not a hot flannel on your chest

You will need to see your GP but some people can be prescribed Lansoprazole which reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes.
Antibiotics are quite standard in treating pneumonia and its only if there are potential additional complications that they keep you in hospital. If I was you I would get an emergency appointment at the GP tomorrow or back to A&E to see if they can give anything additionally for the stomach acid.

Dont attempt to self treat if you are already fighting an infection

Choc ive not got heat pads but will try the hot flannel.
WoolyM this is the 3rd time ive had Pneumonia in 3 years, they kept me in the last twice but as theres no beds they sent me home, they didnt even have space to give me a nebuliser , it was like a cattle market having bloods done.
Will ring my GP tomorrow if nothing works

Apple cider vinegar, pepermint (if i get heartburn while in pub I always ask for a shot of pep) and believe it or not...... coal.

thanks hun, got mints but not the rest lol think hubby is going to have a shopping list in the morning.

Have you got a Minor Injuries near you as they are usually quieter than a A&E, go around 7am in the morning as thats before the busy time, they will be best to advise you. Peppermint tea can help or Gaviscon, be carefull about mixing other medication and alcohol with your steroids and antibots.
Also for the Pnemonia, do a 2-3 times daily steam inhalation, it really does help.

Hope you feel better soon xx

I think once you have had pneumonia once you can be prone to it. You mentioned steroids and although they are powerful drugs they also knock the immune system potentially making you more prone to infection.

It may actually be a bit of a blessing if your condition is manageable to not be in hospital at the moment as the levels of infection may actually be higher in the hospital.
Drink plenty of fluids and keep warm. Hope the Anti Biotics work speedily for you.

Have you given you the pneumovax injection vinly ? I get this every 5 ???? years as I have a non existant immune system plus have had pneumonia several times.

Touch wood, taking extra zinc and echinacea has kept me well this season

'Drink water in between meals, not with meals. If you drink fluids with meals, you increase the volume of stomach contents, which makes it easier for heartburn to happen. You can also try these stomach-cooling juices for heartburn relief: papaya, mango, guava, pear. Or run a cabbage or raw potatoes through a juicer for a natural drink to soothe stomach burn.

Buttermilk is also an acid-reliever, but don't confuse it with regular milk, which can be an acid-maker, especially if you are bothered by lactose intolerance.' From discovering health - home rememdies. The article also mentions that smokers may be more prone to reflux

thats what they said at the hospital im prone to it and the jab i had wont help me to stop getting it.
They did want to keep me in but they had no beds so sent me home rather then spend the night on a trolley in a corridor or sitting in the waiting room, I am glad they did though i hate hospitals

....and...'Chewing 6 or 8 blanched almonds during an episode of heartburn may relieve the symptoms. Chew them well, though, to avoid swallowing air and causing yourself more discomfort.

You can also try brown rice, plain or with a little sweetening. Rice is a complex carbohydrate and is a bland food, which is less likely to increase acidity or relax the sphincter muscle.

Soda crackers (preferably unsalted) are bland, they digest easily, and they absorb stomach acid as well. They also contain bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar, which neutralize the acid. Tip: You know that package of soda crackers they always give you at the restaurant, that you leave on the table? From now on, take them with you. These come in handy when you're plagued by heartburn and can't seek immediate relief.' + 'Apples cool the burn of stomach acid. Eat them fresh, with the skin still on, or cook them for desserts. Apple honey is also a simple remedy that will neutralize stomach acids. Peel, core and slice several sweet apples. Simmer with a little water over low heat for three hours until the mixture is thick, brown, and sweet to the taste. Refrigerate in an airtight container and take a few spoonfuls whenever you have the need. Or, make a compote of baked pumpkin and apples, spiced with cinnamon and honey, for a dessert that's both curative and tasty. '

You're welcome - hope you can find some sort of relief that eases the discomfort. I remember hellish heartburn from pregnancy, it must be a whole lot worse combined with recurrent pneumonia though:(
Best of luck x

thank you all for the tips, tried a few and a couple worked, spoke to the Nurse and she said i can take gaviscon as well but not to much.
thank you all once again.

Ok, i take drugs to control stomach acid on a daily bases and alot of drugs ive been on said don't take with the stomach drugs. So i asked the doctors all the time when they give them to me, they just advise not to taker at the same time but its fine to take a few hrs either side. So your best bet is to phone up your doctor and ask him.
