thanks for the reply but im lost...

ipa? what sort of cctv do i actually look for?

but how would i view the cctv from the iphone/pc- dis it thru a website? if so which one

I use webcamxp with my basic webcam and view it via a webpage on my iphone, comes in handy to keep an eye on the dog.

Have used icambasic and livecams on my iphone too. I should upgrade to a better system but as usual indecisiveness has halted this.

pricey but just a quick search for example

Theres a number of ip cameras on the market , the foscam and the one by Storage Options for instance are very similar and do the same job . You attach them to your network , then view the picture over the internet on any internet capable device , ie phone ,tablet ,notebook ,netbook etc.
All well and good , but the downside of these is you have to set up a PC or laptop in order to record your CCTV footage .There is a number of free programs that will record the cameras ,but I think the problem here especially for me is leaving a PC or laptop on 247 for 7 or 14 days while on your holiday.
I much prefer the HDD type CCTV recorder that you can leave on recording upto 4 cameras , these auto start , so if there was a power cut ,it would continue to record and most of the newer ones have a network connection . Mine dosen't have network ,but is very small ,so can be hidden in a loft or cupboard. I think the important thing is to be able to have evidence to show the Police ,etc the culprits .

my parents have a 4 camera system and I view their place on my computer 140 miles away. As well as them recording anything that moves.

how much do they cost, random people stop by my driveway and dump their fast food crap in front of my house, need to get em fined by reporting some evidence to the police

I think my dad paid around £500 including getting it set up - the firm has top drawer customer service although I forget their name, in Suffolk I think.
Late father in law had a system he wired up from Maplins because people were using his caravan as a toilet wall or something much cheaper if you can diy.
We have cctv running on BT drop wire to our tv ( switch to AV to view it) , we can watch live but don't record anymore since the old video player packed up.
