I've been told the exchanger ^^^^ might need cleaning.

Is that something major to do or expensive lol

The plumber will be here on Friday to look at my boiler for another problem and the heat exchanger was mentioned in an email,i just wondered what to expect when he gets here or anything i need to ask etc, thanks in advance for any advice

It's a Viessmann boiler but the original problem with the boiler has nothing to do with the heat exchanger,i emailed the plumber about this other issue which when running the hot tap for bath water,i keep getting an oily residue in the bath when you let the water out.

Little black specks will be left in the bath when you let the water out and when you try to clean it,it smears as if it's oily,if you leave it to dry the black specks are removed easier.

So i emailed the plumber explaining this and he told me that the heat exchanger might need cleaning.

Hard to explain it,hope you understand what i mean about the black specks!

Thanks DLM,i just spotted a post on there about a noisy boiler, someone said the gas pressure is too low, that's the other problem with mine.

Which in turn reminded me to check the water pressure,i haven't done it for ages and it was too low,so sorted that now.

re pressure he says could be regulato or pipe width...call transco to check it?

he reckons to clean the heat exchanger £60-80

I just wondered how much the heat exchanger thing would be on top of the other thing, which is one of the pipes is too narrow, not enough gas getting to the boiler,so thanks for the heads up

the oily residue combined with the low pressure sounds like the heat exchanger has actually cracked, the residue being the inhibitor getting into the water, sorry but prepare yourself for a new exchanger/boiler.

Plumberman, you couldn't ask your hubby another thing could you please.

When i emailed the plumber about the oily residue and his reply was the heat exchanger may need cleaning he said he would get his repair guy to look at it,i wondered why he'd have to ask someone else if he's a plumber, why can't he do it,any ideas?

The boilers only 3 years old so i best not need a new one,i only asked about the oily residue as an afterthought, maybe i shouldn't have mentioned it lol

Thanks,it's all very confusing, whose qualified to do what.

yep i agree...i just know my partner had to another course for gas safe..then pay to register and repay annually...
he still doesnt fix all boilers by himself although he has been on several boiler courses. It could be just that with your man?

Where are you ?
Use your post code on gas safe website to find local plumber thats on there list.
I needed a gas cert for renting a house started at £75.00 + vat.
Local guy 10 doors away on gas safe site said £30.00
So ring around.

I'm in Manchester.

He's a really helpful guy though, when this problem with the boiler first came to light he wrote me notes etc and advised me what to say when complaining to Corgi about the guy who replaced the boiler,he knew one of the pipes wasn't wide enough and never said anything to me!!

Thanks again plumberman.you're a star.
