Would you not be better going to Sherwood Forest than Nottingham?

It's a bit further north. Theres a visitor centre and stuff. Its a bit crap, but as its close I did get taken there every year with school so I may be biassed!

    How cheap are you looking?

There are a couple of terrible cheap ones: The Gresham Hotel, is near the train station, is dirt cheap, but is supposed to be appalling. There's one near Beeston called Hylands, thats slightly better. Travel Lodge is mediocre, I would pay the extra for Premier Inn, or even Holiday Inn. Let me know if you need any more tips

    Well £60/70

I dont know if going to the forest or nottingham would be better.

Have only been to nottingham when i was little as family lived near it, but since then have only been for football.

a forest is a forest..... go to Nottingham.

Nottingham is all very centralised. I would suggest finding somewhere in West Bridgford so you can walk along the river at night then its just a 20 min walk to Nottingham city centre

my wife's mate works at ibis nottingham and we've stayed there a couple of times. its new and very clean and ideal for the city centre (esp. hockley/lace market - which is great for bars.) I just had a look for you and ibis have a sale on at the moment (march13th to 22nd) up to 50% off. some nights as cheap as £28 over the next couple of months. the castle is quite expensive but may be worth a visit (you get a good view of it without going though) the old trip to jeruselam is worth a look(claims to be britains oldest pub c.1189) the caves are ok and i'm sure your g/f will appreciate the shops.

Youll be very lucky to find anything in Hockley for the sort of money the OP is looking for !!

If i was the OP I would go for the Castle Marina Premier as its just 5 mins walk from the Castle etc and right on the edge of town and can also take a nice stroll along the river.

Stopped at The Hilton a few times. Not specially cheap at this time of year. It does have leisure facilities and is walking distance to centre and attractions. Though it doesn't have its own car park so you have to pay in the nearby NCP.

I always start with Holiday Inn 2-4-1 for 2/4 night stays and then look for something better/cheaper

+1 for the ibis. its normally quite cheap, good rooms, very centralised great location if taking advantage of the good night life in nottingham.

i wouldnt really recommend getting one in west bridgford if you are intending to walk into nottingham via trent bridge as one poster suggested. The bus system in nottingham is very good however, with night buses runing to most parts of nottingham if you did get a further out hotel and wanted to get back after a night out, but wouldnt reccomend walking from city centre to west bridgford late at night if not familiar with nottingham.

also buses run from the victoria centre bus station to the sherwood forest visitors centre daily (think its called the sherwood arrow) so even if staying in a central hotel a trip out via that is always a possibility.
