i stayed at a lovely guesthouse outside whitby....it was near where they filmed heartbeat, cant remember the name of the village, but think it will be a bit too far out if your looking to stay in Whitby itself

i meant the village where the guesthouse was...an amazing little pub there too called the horseshoe lol

Hope you have a nice weekend there anyways

Whitby is so beautiful that I can't wait to return, but it the only place we have walked out of a pub without paying after being served a lunch for four so bad it was literally inedible! The children's food was even frozen in the middle! :w00t:

Forget the name of the pub but it's the main one (only one?) on the busy harbour side, next to the amusement arcade and chippy, and in front of the area where the pirate ship ties up. I still feel slightly sick when I think of it!

Went with the wife a few weeks back for a weekend. We stayed here whitelinenguesthouse.co.uk

2 mins to the centre but far enough away that theres no noise, lovely rooms and the couple that run it are delightful. Think we booked through late-rooms and it was very reasonable

Thanks from me for that too. We'll be going again this summer and the drive makes it necessary to stay overnight. Will give this place a go

    Btw, do they have parking?

Should have just got fish & chips from the Magpie and ate them on a bench on the pier and I think the pirate ship is supposed to be a model - its supposed to be a scaled down version of what James Cook sailed on.

The chip shop the "locals" supposedly recommend is the one across the bridge from the Magpie side of the harbour (Mr Chips?) but I thought the Magpie was better.

I can recommend a nice 2 bedroom converted cottage we stayed in if you are going for a week.....not cheapest though.

That's what we ended up doing after walking out. Boy, were they glad to see the back of us after I pointed out all the problems. They wouldn't even let me pay for the two rounds of drinks we'd put on the tab!

Didn't know that about the ship, but it was a great trip for the kids. And what I liked about it - and Whitby in general - is that they didn't try to charge rip-off prices. It's a really good value seaside location imo.

We also had a lovely afternoon tea up at the grand old hotel overlooking the town while the kids played on the green area with the statue of Cook. The hotel has seen better days, but it was charming and what a location!

Stayed in a B&B behind the hotel on a spur of the moment decision and didn't regret it. Lovely spot.

My kids liked the ship too. Whitby is very nice but as you say parking can be a problem.

There is also a very good kipper shop near the stairs up to the Abbey where you can get freshly smoked kippers (does them in a smokehouse behind the shop).

Would have liked to have gone fossil hunting with the kids but never got around to it.

try travelodge they have there 9 rooms on offer still
