I like the fact it's keeping lots of tradesmen in work but fear for them once it's all over. I'm not going to go but will probably watch some of it on TV. Was a bit funny when olympic clock broke down after it's big unveiling.

Weird you mention olympic clock as I was just reading about that and looking at Omega olympic watches!.. Budget doesn't stretch that far though so just bought a watch on eBay (item 270769404435) - whatcha think?

Wow, you really are getting into the spirit of things. Good on you! So long as you're happy with it then that's what matters.

You going to be buying any other memorabilia? Surely there will be foam fingers available for you to buy on the day.

What do you think of the GB football team? Did you get any tickets for that?

    Original Poster

Yes I got a ticket to the football semi final. I am a big Beckham fan so would love it if he plays!

    Hate the Logo.

Got tickets for the handball on my birthday though, pretty pleased with that!

Is it not a sure thing that Beckham will play? Or do you mean that it will be nice if team GB reach the semi-final? Even if they do I guess it could be the one you don't have tickets for. Fingers crossed that you get to see him though.

Wonder if the fans will come up with a GB chant. Shouldn't it be team UK though if it's to include Northern Ireland?

Have the people of Northern Ireland been fussed over competing under Team GB in previous Olympics?

Seeing as he is over 23 years old -- I doubt it!

Ooh just read up again and there are 3 open age footballers allowed with the other 15 being under 23. Still, unlikely that they would pick Beckham unless other players refused.

Don't know, haven't asked them and didn't know they did. Seems a bit strange that it's not a UK team then.

Team GB has always been the name, the NI, Welsh and Scots have been competing under for a century. Not sure why it's an issue for the footballers.

I can't wait for the triple jump when someone breaks their ankle on the concrete

I don't think it's the name that's the issue for footballers. I think it's just the smaller countries dont want to see it as a sign of things to come.

The name thing was a question I asked as it doesn't make sense to have it team GB when GB doesn't include Northern Ireland but if it's just a case of doing what they have always done then fair enough.

Yeah i can understand their worry over their future in that respect. Saying that I have no issue with a permanent GB/UK team and even a GB/UK football league.

Probably due to the rivalries and the abundance of thick football fans on the dole. It would be interesting to see this put together and perhaps collectively we can actually win something for a change. (although undoubtedly they will stick 10 English players in there (of the 15 under 23's) despite more talent being available elsewhere)

Hopefully bring us all a bit closer.

I found the answer to my question though. GB are officially entered into the olympics as Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It's just shortened to team GB.

There is a school of thought that they might include Beckham as he would certainly put bums on seats, and he helped secure the Olympics in the first place. Also he is not exactly busy with commitments to the English team these days.

He is not the best over 23 eligable player anymore, but one would imagine he could do a good job inspiring the younger players.

David Beckham (according to press reports) has also said he is keen to take part. It's also unlikely that any "big" players in contract with premier league would be expected to take part so close to new season preparations so DB is obvious answer.

am looking forward to it big time.....was gonna book tickets but clashes with Ramadhan next year! so will have to watch it from home (not fun to be there fasting !!)

Technically we compete in the olympics not under the name of 'Great Britain', but under 'Great Britain and Northern Ireland' it is just abbreviated to GBR and Team GB.
Team GBANI doesn't have the same ring to it :P

Love the olympics, summer and winter, will be watching and cheering, love the swimming / diving, track and field and cycling, will be great to be able to watch it @ normal times rather than wait up until early hours to catch some events.

Im pretty sure the reason for it not being called UK is because Ireland Represents the WHOLE of the Ireland. Athletes from Northern Ireland get a choice of who they want to represent, Team Ireland or Team GB. Hence not Officially a 'UK' Team because of this even though the IOC Definition of Team GB does actually include all the protectorates included in the UK designation.

so who is up at six tomorrow for tickets?.. my solitary football ticket means I am not allowed!

    Original Poster

Seen all the fuss about all the tickets bought by EU nationals (150,000 or 5% apparently).. Speaking as someone who got all my decent tickets from other EU sites I can confirm it very much works both ways!.. I didn't double dip so much as quadruple dip!.. I bet more than 5% of EU tickets went to the uk, probably more than 75% did!

I think some of the moaners should probably have just got busy checking out other European sites themselves instead of leaping online to whine, it was relatively straightforward buying from abroad and only modest charges were levied over the face value of the ticket.

Anyone get the e-mail about volunteering to take part in opening and closing ceremonies today?.. I'm gonna give it a whirl.. Not sure what they are looking for.. I can't sing or dance but can play the odd musical instrument!

Got a few more Olympic tickets today from Belgium and Cyprus - missed the boat really but got beach volleyball, archery, dressage and synchro swimming!

So I had an audition at the weekend to be one of the 1000s performing at the London 2012 opening and or closing ceremonies. And I got a confirmation today I have got through to the second (and final round!) So excited!.. Not sure what they were looking for in the first audition - as I can't dance! Have everything crossed for the second audition now!

Best of luck to you. If it's dedication they are after you should fly through.

Don't know - it's all very hush hush.. Part of one of the segments where however many hundreds of people do this or that actions at once I guess!.. I don't mind what it is though, I will be there on the field of play in the centre of the action!..
