How were the merchants selected?
The original idea was to pull merchant nominations from the community but after considering how it would work we decided there was probably no better (or fairer) way than to take a look at some data. We looked at activity from 2018 into 2019 and pulled down the most popular merchants that make up your shortlist. By popular we mean discussion on threads (having a minimum threshold of threads shared per merchant), average thread heat and general interaction from our community.

Why are we doing this?
We are all here because we love deal hunting and that means interacting with merchants daily and sharing our experiences with eachother. The knowledge our community has is incredible so it seems like a nice idea to make a thing of it and see who comes out on top.

What is in it for hotukdeals?
Nothing This is a positive thread so i'd rather not address this but I know for sure one or two of you will (and I can direct you to this comment each time instead of responding individually ). It is no secret how hotukdeals is funded (see our About page) and contrary to popular belief not every merchant on hotukdeals has an affiliate program but that doesn't stop them being shown on hotukdeals. Many of those merchants are actually shortlisted for your votes. They are there because they deserve to be, no other reason.

What is in it for you guys?
If you spend a couple of minutes to vote you are in with a chance to win 1 of 3 £100 vouchers to spend at ANY shortlisted merchant. So make sure you vote and follow the instructions!

Shortlisted merchants at at glance...

Finally....
I want this thread to be something positive and constructive. If you guys have some feedback on this idea then please share it as we'd love to hear.

Looks like each category has suffered the omission of one additional merchant option: "other", and without that option the results are kinda skewed.
No CDkeys?

We decided to base the shortlist on data. Maybe in future we can consider a "community pick" (as a pre-vote exercise) but that is really what the data has provided us with.

Doesn’t make sense that the most popular surely wowcher wouldn’t be popular, sadly seems to be more of an advertising feature probably being cynical but that’s who it looks.

odd you have to pick as well, all mandatory fields when you might not use a retailer or want to pick one. don’t do gaming for example and have to chose a retailer I have never used, pick Ryanair because even though I never flown with them.

That’s all I’m going to say or I’ll start ranting about Amazon and how naff they actually are compared to every other retailer out there.

eBay is NOT a retailer, it does not sell anything it is merely a market place that enables multiple retailers to reach buyers.

Not everyone, Amazon are an anticompetitive monopoly, it's a negative factor in deciding "do I really need this?".
I primarily use eBay, but I can still recognise that they have effectively destroyed the high street and that has had a huge negative impact on society. So I wouldn't ever cheer and wave a flag on their behalf, but it is what it is.

Are the 3 prize draw prizes exclusively for HUKD or are they for the worldwide Pepper community like the last whatever it was that was run along similar lines?

You'd be excluding merchants from your top 5 because they don't want to be held to ransom to be included for giving something back. As I said above, there is no obligation for merchants to do anything. This is about our community picking and not the merchants picking themselves for inclusion.

Held to ransom for organisation of a marketing budget and planning that already exists ? run inline with a HUKD Awards promotion the winner stands to gain from....

That aside...
£300 is a pittance too, HUKD make that in commission in minutes. HUKDera know that. As I said - great idea poor planning on that alone.

“Finally....
I want this thread to be something positive and constructive. If you guys have some feedback on this idea then please share it as we'd love to hear.“

I’m not being critical, I’m giving constructive feedback like you asked, I’m saying in essence it’s a great idea but it’s shambolic poor offerings for 3 £100 winners from a massive multinational conglomerate like Pepper that has great income from HUKDers clicks to pawn them off with £300 as something ‘fantastic’, yes it’s something but it’s poor in comparison to what HUKD could easily afford to offer.

Here’s hoping you build on two years of Awards and in 2020 offer something substantial out that Pepper user gained profits.

Soenke Kisker the Chief Financial Officer of HUKD surely could afford more than £300 winners fund out his budget.

Perhaps Chloe Reeve Public Relations Manager for HUKD/Pepper (UK) is available for comment for us all to contact...

No Amazon? Farcical.

They're pretty much my go to retailer and although sometimes they follow others on price, a lot of the time they price lead.

I've bought a load of stuff from them because they're the cheapest, the deal was HOT and i know they'll deliver it.

From your own deal counter, Amazon have 65951hot deals on here - but they're not in the list?

I suspect theres some ulterior motive to that......

I'd vote cold, the Mods need to bet vetted before being chosen, most make up the rules as they see fit or delete posts, only to then open them again as themselves.

There isn't (and i've covered this above in other comments). We're looking at specific categories. Just because they have that many hot threads on site doesn't mean they sit within the top 5 of our specified categories that we've asked you all to vote on.

I think you are focusing too much on what is essentially something we don't have to be offering but we wanted to and if it encourages people to vote then it works well both ways.

We (Pepper) run many giveaways through the year with the Flamedeer offering some pretty amazing prizes at the end of the year. You don't have to participate in any giveaway and I think criticising a prize as a "pittance" is hardly constructive. But anyway, i'll leave it there.

Gaming should be split into the 4 main platforms (switch, ps4, xbox and PC). Otherwise people will just vote for whichever services are available on the device they own. A console gamer is highly unlikely to vote humble bundle and PC numbers are smaller so this has no chance of winning.

Thats a fair point. We ran with our current group/categories so if a merchant was in the top 5 it was because the community put them there so hopefully that means they aren't at a voting disadvantage because they community are already engaging well with them. I'll add this point though for discussion when we debrief
Sorry @magicjay1986 missed Amazon we’re missing earlier cannot see how it wouldn’t fall into a category with the number of daily deals, BF and discounts they give 20% off as I said earlier the names certainly don’t make any sense and them missing is very strange whether we like them or not. Wowcher up there Amazon your accountant need to loose their bonus

Who knew that giving away £300 would be so difficult and/or controversial

I think the heat they get is from the misprices they have, which boosted their rating, plus with things like my £5 off thread and discount codes being rare so they end up going into the 1000's this helps a lot

All I can say is that they weren't and then try to give reasons why I think they didn't feature in the top 5s. Some thoughts:

- their offers are often time limited so engagement is short lived?
- they offer products across many categories and maybe other merchants are stronger in their specialist category?
- members realise they aren't the cheapest place to buy products?
- many deals rely on Prime to be market leading which comes at an additional price?
Good idea @magicjay1986. Hope you're well.

Yep still doesn’t add up though, according to the search, yeah I know wowcher has 216 deals not all of them are travel yet it’s BA has double that and doesn’t feature of course timings could be the reason but problem is as I said earlier if it doesn’t look right then no one will believe it.

It is what it is but.....
I think this is all absolutely terrible. In protest, everyone should join together and not vote.

I’ll take my voucher for Argos please, @magicjay1986
Shortlist must be compiled by the highest paying referrals. John Lewis and Travelodge are one of the worst out there

I'm not voting for anything without a free choice.
can't say I like any of the options... not really a fair 'people's choice' award when you can't vote for anyone you want to

Why are we being forced to agree to something which is not presented in the language of this country?
I'm just glad that hukd are being thoughtful and appreciative to their members with this draw.
Other companies would use this information for profit.
It's nice to know that they view this community as a big family.
Thank you hukd.

Yeah, it's a tricky one. I think the biggest gap is between PC and console, retailers like cdkeys and greenman are good examples. PC deals rarely hit the same heat levels as consoles Maybe consider separating consoles/PC.,, I'd vote different in both categories as have a PC and an xbox. Food for thought

Another suggestion for next year best value monthly paid subscription. Netflix vs xbox gamepass vs Spotify. Yes they are different areas but all of them are competing for a share of our wallets. Be good to which of the above really goes all out to give the best value.
If you’re entering the gift card draw I suggest you read peppers privacy policy first before agreeing to it, £100 was not worth my data.
