Housework/ Pocket Money rota in your house over the holidays.

I was just wondering what happens with how much housework your teenagers are given and how much pocket money they are given, mainly focusing on the last 3 weeks that have been these Summer Holidays.

I'm just wondering on what they do, and what they get in comparison to myself.

I'm looking for parents who are a work the whole day (9-5 job) and leave their children in the house.

    Thanks in advance.

i work part time do i count? my 3 do nothing, expect everything!

You should help your parents out because you want to, not because they're bribing you with money. When you grow up and have your own house, no one is going to give you money for cleaning it yourself!

Unselfish ones?! From the age of 11 I got up at about 6am to get to school which was an hours drive from my house for 7.45, I didn't finish until half 5 and then got home at half 6 and still had 2-3 hours homework a night... I still unstacked the dishwasher and did bits to help out my Mum - without being asked. Most of the teenagers I know help out their parents! I know a 7 year old who gets up in the morning, makes his own breakfast and then cleans his dishes!!!

my kids get their own breakfast.... they are not that bad lol

And I went to school 6 days a week... what's your point! You're obviously after pocket money, else you wouldn't be asking about it! The fact is, when you grow up you won't be paid to clean, so don't get used to it!

Ahh right, thanks for your input

Sassie how old are you children?

one of my sons is the same age as you BL, He gets £40 per month paid into his bank account, out of this he buys his own xbox games, clothes (extra to the ones I buy) pictures, trips to town etc. I dont make him stick to a particular rota anymore but when I ask him to do stuff around the house I dont expect an arguement about it, he just gets on with it.

do you not get pocket money? as in money to spend on yourself? maybe your parents dont have the money to give, to be fair my daughter is pretty ok as she has had a job since she was 15 and gets quiet a bit to herself so never asks, although son wants everything going - lol

@Sassie - I get nothing at all, but then again, i am supposed to get money for 'stuff i want' i dont go out much, i only ever go out if im walking the dog with my mates or go over my girlfriends. But then when i rarely do want to go out and i may want £40 for 2 nights out, (the first time i had been out on a night out in about 6 months, they would not give me it, they gave me £20 for the first night, but none for the second. Which in a way i can understand. My parents seem to have the money for a hot tub and to convert the garage, so i doubt that is a problem.

@Bitsey - Like i said above, i get nothing, and i do the housework every day, but the thing that is getting at me is the fact that she is still not happy with it.

Maybe you could discuss with your parents about giving you a little allowance each week if they can afford it, asking for £40 in one go is probably alot even though you dont ask for money all the time, speak to them

I have tried speaking to them constantly. But it turns into an argument and its just the sme every single time. They can afford it. I know they can, i would be happy with a fiver/tenner a month.

you need to speak to them BL as everyones situation is different. Maybe you could get yourself a paper round ( both my younger sons have one) to show that you are willing to help yourself and ask if there is a possibilty of an allowance. Discuss with them what this allowance will go towards ie, clothes, socialising, games etc.
Because I know what my sons allowance is spent on its less of a headache for me than having him asking for money every 5 minutes, he also knows thta when its gone its gone, hopefully helping him in the future to budget.

what are their reasons to not giving you anything, as you have obviously discussed it. totally understand if you would rather not say. How old are you now? Maybe they feel your old enough to get a little job and fund yourself

My son is 11 now and has been a great wee helper around the house since he was 8. I started him off with putting the laundry away.....I would have it in wee piles and he would put it in the right places. Then I built on that .......emptying dishwasher and also walking the dog. He gets £10 a week and all of that he saves until something good out for the xbox. I pay for treats like the cinema, bowling etc.

He has, in the last couple of months, started leaving crisp wrappers, empty water bottles on his bedroom floor..............so told him every time I come in and find something on the floor - for each item £1 will be taken off his pocket money.....past week his floor been spotless lol

I'm 15. 16 next month, i'm trying to get a job, but ive only been asking at the places were i personally know the owners/employees, trust me, when i turn 16, i will be trying my hardest to get a job, its easier to get a job at 16 then it is at 15.

The reason i don't get money is because i am meant to get 'what i want' - which makes me sound spoilt, but i dont want anything. So now, instead, i would like to get a small amount a month so then i can save up, save for months and months and buy something like a phone or laptop. But another argument they have is that when my brother was my age, he didnt get pocket money, so its not fair on him for me to get some. But in my opinion, he didnt do as much housework when he was 15, then what i did (He's 18 now)

wait til they are in the hot tub-chuck in a toaster(must be plugged into the mains),and you will get the lot!

what do you mean you are supposed to get what you want, you mean if you ask for playstation 3 you get one? or you ask for a game they get you one? if this is the case maybe they are concerned about you having cash for whatever their reasons, maybe frightened you will buy drugs, drink etc,etc

I mean like a game, but then again, I got my first game a couple of weeks ago, for the first time in years, (not including when i got them for birthdays) i paid £25 from that £32 game.

They know i will not buy drink and drugs. Come on, do you really think a 15 year old lad who posts on a shopping forum would spend money on getting drunk and stoned? :L Thats just not me, i hate the smell of smoke, and i hate the taste of lager, cider, beer etc.

well from what you have said their is a reason why they dont want to give you cash, and do you think those that drink and do drugs say they do, of course they dont they say the exact same thing as you just have, was just maybe giving you food for thought about maybe why they dont want to give you cash, anyway have another chat to them and see if you can get somewhere

When I wanted an allowance I wrote a list of things I would use the money for and tried to justify what I asked for and gave the list to my parents who then agreed and started to give me a proper allowance.
Maybe if you wrote down a list of things you would spend the money on your parents will understand more, though beware if you list basics like bathroom products and clothes etc you might find out things like that cost more than you expected and that you were better off when your mum bought it for you, but it is worth listing some basic things to show that you are trying to be grown up about it and take some financial responsibility for yourself and that you want to learn the management and value of money.
