How can i make my computer quieter?

Is it possible to make a computer quiet when your on a budget of £30?

At the moment my pc sounds like its trying to take off, although its not as bad as my xbox when reading a disk, but its still not quite enough to sleep confortably with. Since i love to download a lot e.g. demos etc which can be quite larger so i leave my computer on over night.

I have a budget of £30 to spend on making my computer reasonably quiet, would it be possible; if so how?

At the moment i have the following in my computer

    2 x 120mm intake and exhaust fans
    2 x 80mm intake fans
    120mm cpu fan
    PSU fan

So as you can tell it can get quite noisy. I have a fan controller so at night i can turn them down which works quite well but obviously not well enough. Can i purchase fans which make less noise or something along them line?

Please help a sleep deprived person in need with a small budget :-( .

    Thanks
    Simon

Turn the PC off? :giggle: Buy some quiet fans and make sure the tower isn't full of dust.

You should hear (or not hear) an improvement straight away.

I've made my PC pretty much 100% silent. The main noise usually comes from PSU and tiny fans on the motherborad. I've replaced my PSU with a usit with 140mm fan (the biger the fan the slower it has to rotate). You can even get fanless PSUs (there is a cheap one on ebuyer). Then I've replaced the tiny fan I had on the motherboard by a fanless radiator. Next, I've bought a 120mm Zelman fan + flower radiator for the CPU and set it on the lowest speed setting. Finally, I've cut the power wires from the PSU that go to the case fans and swapped the 0V with +12V wires to get a +7V rail which slows down the case fans (google 7V mod for more instructions).

I opened mine up and hoovered the dust off of the inside and fan. Now its fine.

    the main noise is

    psu
gfx fan (which can be really noisy)

and it used to be the stock cpu coolers but as cpus are running less hot they are very silent

and the type of fans u use as intake and exhaust coolin

    hahaha so true :-D

Good idea is to work out in order which fans are making the noise - first turn off case fans, then temporarily stop CPU fan / graphics card fan. If its the PSU that is causing the noise spend your money on a better quiet PSU. If its the CPU & case fans get a fan controller and perhaps some silent fans (quite expensive). If you motherboard has a noisy northbridge fan replace it with a fanless heatsink (link a Zalman). If its the graphics card, depending on what you currently have, either card a new passive-cooled card or get an aftermarket cooler like a Zalman.

Also depends on what CPU you have. If you have a Pentium 4 or Celeron it will tend to be noisy - the CPU is constantly dissipating 50W+ of heat and this also works the PSU harder, your money may be well spent upgrading to a Core2 (especially if you pay for your electricity). If you have an Athlon64 or Core make sure you enable cool&quiet so the clock speed is throttled back when inactive (such as at night when you are d/l).

It might help if you could tell us the make and models of those items OP.

I just built a new HTPC and it's relatively silent, but that is just for playing HD films. If you are into gaming, it is doubtful that you will achieve a big improvement.

Sharkoon "Golfball" 120mm fans are very good, they shift a lot of air and are low speed (therefore, quiet).

Std PSUs tend to be very noisy, unless you bought a Dell I use Tagan in my PCs.

As stated, passive gfx cards will help immensely, even a 6200 !

Finally, I've used double sided carpet tape to stick carpet squares on the inside of the shells.

    Silence

Rubber grommets/washers on the hard/dvd drives can help also reduce vibration noise.

The noise from the NVIDIA graphics card in my PC was driving me nuts. All it took to quiet it was Rivatuner, no fuss and its free. Don't know if a similar tweak utility exists for ATI cards?

My uber-geeky-nerd mate has his PC monitor, keyboard, mouse and external DVD writer in his study. These peripherals are linked to his PC which is mounted on a cage in his garage! He swears by it and the garage is a good 5C cooler in the summer than the house and as it's a modern house the garage isn't dusty. It's weird seeing some cables terminate into the wall between his study and garage! He also uses a remote on/off switch.

That's easy, all you need to do is put your PC base unit in another room and shut that door... then you have a quiet pc :-D :-D

now all you need to buy is long cables extension for all your devices, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

Yeah but that means having to walk all the way to the other room in order to put a cd in, unless i built a remote controlled disk changer or just put bought another hard drive and copied all of my disks onto there.

well, putting CD in isn't something that you *MUST* do in order to use the PC is it?

You can easily make ISO image of your existing CD you need, then use DAEMON tools to mount the image whenever you need it. That's well easy to do.

My pc is just a couple of month old but its sooo loud, I cant determine where the noise is coming from apart from inside the base unit!
The fan is massive and rotates slowly, but ive got to make it quieter, its just too loud atm!

Heres a few pics, any suggestions much appreciated.

One thing to check is to make sure the heat sink is sitting in the CPU correctly.

You should also use a bit of thermal paste (about the size of a grain of rice), when re-seating the heat sink.

Both of these will ruduce the heat of the CPU and thus the CPU fan will not have to work as hard.
