How comes my laptops battery life has become almost nonexistant?

    Hi everyone,

I bought a DELL 6400 Laptop about a year ago and at first the battery life used to survive for about 3-4 hours but noticed it's getting worse and worse as time goes on.

Now it's actually so bad, that it literally will last under a minute if you takeout the plug, so i'm wondering if there's any solutions for this, as it's become very inconvenient and has destroyed the whole purpose of having a laptop?

My medion has done exactly the same, medion will not do anything about it and it was only a month or so over the year, now i have to use my laptop as a desktop

I think you'll just have to buy another battery.

Has it been plugged in constantly? or run down constantly?

Mine has always been fully charged, then run down i was totally peed with medion as they confirmed that a battery should last alot longer than this, yet will not replace, if i unplag it shows as fully powered up then within 10 minutes it just shuts down no warning or nothing :-(

My Dell Inpirion 6000 now only has about 2 hours battery life on the rare occasion that I am using battery. Have only used battery about 15 times since I got it, so cant be that i have over used it!

Lucky for me I got a laptop so that I can use it when ill in bed, and so dont really need the battery aspect of it

I have a toshiba tablet notebook that the battery has suddenly decided to go. I rarely use it on battery to be fair and it remains plugged in to the mains all of the time. I know you used to be able to get a moulded bit if plastic to put in the battery bay to make the laptop lighter so you could leave the battery out.

I'm not sure if it should be left in or out to be honest, personally I prefer it plugged in as it acts as a UPS should someone knock the plug/lead.

ermm is it not common knowlegde for batteries that thier lifespans shorten over time

after maybe 3 years it probably wont even hold its charge

    same as mobile phone batteries

    One year isn't reasonable

you need to calibrate them occasionally - check the support section of the manufacturers website.

Well without trying to rub it in, My Dell laptop thats 4-5 years old used constantly still has the original battery which lasts a good 40 mins.

Or I should say "did" last 40mins, As of last week something has damaged the recharging circuit, So now the battery won't charge but it was being used daily.

(Its got a naff PIII processor, 256mb RAM and crap graphics though!!)

My Sony has lost about 10% of it's original battery life over the last 3 years.

I agree with davelfc. One year is unreasonable.

That's terrible, as i've barely used the battery at all, as it's normally plugged in the mains but i will most likely require to use it more while i travel in the coming months.

Do you think Dell will replace this for me or is there somewhere i could buy the battery for cheap?

If you read up on the the Li ion battery tech it is a know issue short shelf/use life , I think dell have a page somewhere that explains this as well I think they say 300cycles.

Ebay is probably your best bet, although ebay these days is more of a gamble.

yep my toshiba a40 wont last 5 mins. shows as fully charged then shuts down with no warning.

That could well be the problem, The manufacturers normally recommend running down the battery and recharging every so often.

It will probably say in the manual somewhere.

If the battery is complety dead, There is a couple of reports on the web that reckon sticking it in the freezer for 24 hours works, I think thats probably rubbish but if you've only got 1 min of battery life there isn't much to lose!

When you say about a year I take it you mean it's the wrong side of a year for warranty purposes?

I think i purchased it June last year, so it's about 13 months old now, so I'm sure Dell will tell me that i'm wasting my time in trying to get any help from them.

How do you do that? I have gone onto the Acer website and can't even find the model nmber of mine (its a Aspire 3610 by the way).

Batteries in Dell laptops are covered by a 1yr warranty + two weeks grace, so you might be in luck. Can't hurt to call them up - 0870 90 80 800 for your Home system's line. Have your service tag (7 digits long, ends in a J, will be on the underside of your system) and serial number of the battery on hand when you call, and try to call before 4pm, because when people start coming homein the late afternoon and evening, the queue length rockets.

If you can't get the battery replaced under (or slightly out of warranty - whinge a lot about the Sales Of Goods Act and you might get a manager to auth an OOW replacement), I think Part Sales is 0870 062 4542, I think. Although I might be wrong on that, as I don't have my phone list with me, and I'm rather thick.

I think the old freezer trick only works on Ni-Cad batteries because of the memory effect. It doesn't apply to Li-Ion, as far as I'm aware.

Does anyone know if Toshiba covers the battery in the 12 month warranty?

Unfortunately li-ion batteries do degrade over time, they have a limited amount of charges and shelflife. Bearing this in mind it's unacceptable to fix the battery in place (which Apple are particularly guilty for), at least for laptops and many others you can replace the battery when the battery has degraded too far.

funny thing my battery has become non existant
only bought the laptop in feb if i take out the mains the comp switches off completely

did notice the battery was rather warm this afternoon though for soome strange reason

    its an acer aspire 5633

That definitely sounds like a fault with either the laptop or battery - I'd get in touch with Acer technical support.
