How do I attach big speakers to the PC?

Pretty random, and probably one of those silly questions... but I want to play music on my proper decent speakers from the PC. Is there some sort of adaptor I can buy to plug them into the headphone socket, or is the whole thing impossible?

Alternatively, where can I get a good deal on decent PC speakers?

    Thanks, in advance.

Foreign language to me... are you saying it's not really possible without laying out big money? I'm wanting to mount the decent speakers I've got on the walls around the house, and run a shed load of cable about so I can put long playlists on while I do 'housework'. (Or just boogie around with the music up loud, pretending to do housework...)

yeah you will defo need an amplifier which will be able to power the speakers to give volume to your music, as the plug in your laptop/PC really won't be able to do.

The stereo/hifi that your speakers are plugged into? Look on the back and see if it has any spare inputs labeled 'AUX' or a pair of spare round sockets (most probably one red, one white or red and black)

Or just take a pic of the back and we'll go from there.:)

Yes, there are Right and Left 'VIDEO/AUX' sockets. Is there a way I can connect the whole thing to the PC then?

Just the two I want to deal with for this. (There's another two biggies, but they're in the bedroom...( They've each got three cables coming off them, one (each) that looks like a round pluggy thing, and two bare wire ended (each) black and red. I'm such a girl. I think I'm reaching beyond my grasp here.

The speakers I want to use have the connections I described. Each one has a round pluggy thing, currently plugged into the back of the HiFi. They also each have two bare wire ended wires, one black and one red (EACH speaker) that are currently connected to the back of the hifi by a sort of clippy thing - you inster the wire and press the clip to hold it in. I don't even know if they are necessary - but they are there...
So in all there are TWO speakers, each with THREE wires, SIX wires in all...

ahh they are connected to a hi-fi already, ok you probably can connect your PC to the hifi which will have the amp to drive the speakers

OK - so at the cost of sounding like an idiot (more than I presently do) how do I do that?

well it depends on the inputs/plug sockets the Hi-Fi has, can you take a pic or model of the hifi?

Surely this is a simple 3.5mm jack to phono lead effort?
Just connect the 3.5mm to your line out and the phono leads to an input on the amp.

Or alternatively connect a 3.5mm FM transmitter to the back of the PC and tune your stereo into the required frequency.

Well guessing on the back of the PC it has 'line out' (looks like a headphone socket) then you need something like ]this.

There is a headphone socket on the front - is this the same?

Am trying to upload a pic of the sockets on the back...

Can't work out how to upload a piccie. I DO have one of those FM transmitter things though, I'll try that after I've fed the kids their tea.

Will come back to you all if it's unsuccessful - thanks ever so much for the help. Hopefully the transmitter will work, and save on cabling too!!

No a headphone socket is an amplified output, the 'line out' is a set volume. Using the headphone socket may damage your stereo. If it's a modern computer the socket should be green or have a green back plate.

Photoshack isn't letting me get the phot uploaded. Is there another place I can stick it to show you? Otherwise, it's an AIWA CX-NSZ52EZ. It's quite old, but I like it. It plays very well, very loud - and that's important to me, so if the transmitter's going to be pants - I'll leave it in the car.

I've finally managed to upload a dodgy pic ]here

Fab - sounds perfect. So I just get one of those, stick it in the headphone out socket in the pc and into the Vid/Aux in the hifi, and that's that - right?

Sorry - just read this, there's a group of coloured sockets on the back of the pc - I take it to be the green one then. Will purchase aforementioned cable.

    Thanks guys, you're great.
