I'm pretty sure when you put in your install DVD it will ask you if you want to format the drive

Formatting a drive doesn't delete the data.

You have a few options, you can either boot the laptop from a boot cd with a format utility (you need to make sure you have your boot order correctly) or mount the drive in a USB caddy and hook it up to another PC then run an eraser utility from there.

Don't ask why I'm up at 4am :).

You seem to be a little confused... do you have a legite Vista DVD & key ready to put Windows back on after wiping the hard drive? (a lot of machines don't) Last thing you want is a machine without an O/S.

If you do then you're looking for something like dban.org.

Windows does not securely wipe any data off the drive either in Setup or post-installation, that has always been the case so I doubt Vista differs.

You cannot format a hard drive while you are in Windows as Windows is using the hard dirve as it is installed on it.

You CAN format the drive at the start of the install of Windows.

If you have a windows CD in the drive and you boot the laptop, when you get the message "press any key to boot from CD" then you must press a key VERY QUICKLY as it only gives you a few seconds.

If you "press any key" quickly enough then it should go into the Windows install and during the install it will give you the option of formatting the drive.

While formatting the drive will seem to remove all the files on the drive, if someone has a tool to recover data from the hard drive they COULD recover it, but for an ordinary person it is not worth the effort (but you may be unlucky).

There are tools around like Eraser but you normally have to run the tool from a diskette drive, or as has been said, you need to put the hard drive in another computer.

You can run Eraser from WITHIN Windows and it will write over all the empty space on your drive over and over again to remove traces of files. You could do this, THEN do a format at the start of the Windows install.

That will probably be enough to stop all but the most determined person.

You can download Eraser from here: heidi.ie/nod…/14

Sounds like you've got it set to boot from HDD before the CD/DVD. Change it in the boot options.
