How Do Instore Promotions Work?

I have seen more and more instore promotions recently where if you buy one thing or spend x amount, you can get something else at a discounted price.

For example: Woolworths are doing buy Pokemon Pearl DS together with Pokemon Diamond DS and get some other DS game for £10.

W H Smiths ran Spend £30 and get Harry Potter Book 7 for £5

So here's the question. If you take up these offers and then return the other items do you get to keep the discounted item at no additional cost?

Nope... not normally.

You would get a refund minus the full price of the item you still have.

Although WH Smith prob wouldnt care about the book, Woolworths would i reckon.

in a word no, some staff might not realise but where i work if say the ds games above you will have effectviely only bought one game if you return one so i would only give the difference back not the full price

That's a shame. I wonder if the point could be argued? Do these companies need to publish terms and conditions for promotions like these?

some stores give vouchers if you return an item without a receipt - that way you could get full amount of the item, but in vouchers

Tescos never deduct clubcard points earnt when you return something which surprises me.

Thats because its mostly on a couple of points, not worth the hassle really.

They dont charge you for delivery from tesco extra if you buy a sim card and then return it though....
