how do u cook your turkey to stop it being dry?

was wondering if anyone has ever cooked it in the slow cooker?or how to prevent it becoming dry?

butter inside and foil ontop for half the cooking. Baste every 30mins aswell.

My mum cooks it overnight in the slow cooker and it's never been dry. Something like 12 hours cooking, it's crazy.

Buy a duck.

Shame I don't like turkey as we're stuck with the sodding great big thing till New Years!

You could always boil your Turkey to avoid it being dry.

I cook mine overnight, covered in butter with a big cooking apple inside and it's never dry

On a serious note...

Put it on a rack with water in the bottom of the tray, cover in foil and cook. Then when it's nearly ready, off with the foil to roast the top until it's brown:thumbsup:

Lay the turkey in about half a cup of water then cover with the tin foil as usual. The steam trapped inside will keep the meat moist. Take off the tin foil about 30 minutes before the turmkey is done. I do this with chicken, beef and lamb and they always come out very tender.

Edit: Just noticed shengis does almost the same. Great minds and all of that

i normally cook all my joints of meat in the slow cooker and they are always tender,but a bit worried about cooking turkey in there
i may cook it in half a cup of water as suggested thanks

This is what i've always done - yummy and never dry

cook it upside down wrapped loosely in foil.. then for the last half hour unwrap and cook the right way up to brown him off.. and don't forget to let it rest for at least 15-20 minutes before carving

OMG. I have tried this. Trying to turn a roasting hot large turkey over is a nightmare. Would never do it again.lol

Yes I agree:thumbsup: Best way to do it. I still put butter in between the skin and breast though. I dont stuff it. Just place a little stuffing in the middle for the flavour.

Ooops. forgot to say I also put streaky bacon on top then take it off to brown

Thanks for the heads up on that one, I read about this on the Delia Smith, or it could of been Nigela's web site and I was going to try it out tomorrow.. think now I'll stick with the traditional way.

definitely upsidedown - chickens too. Keeps the breast very moist. Streaky bacon on the topside. Covered in foil. If you dont mind the skin pale then dont turn it till you carve it. Otherwise turn very carefully - preferably 2 of you using oven gloves, carving fork and tongs

It is do-able if you have a pair of turning forks ( and strong wrists) but not otherwise!!

put butter under the skin as well as on top and baste all the way through the cooking, don't have the oven to high, and slow roast the stinking bird of hell for 20 mins a pound plus 20 mins,:)

I have never cooked turkey, my slow cooker would be too smal and I don't cook at Christmas

But I cook any meat I do cook in there, including whole chickens and it is far nicer than in the oven. And easier for young children to eat too. When my daughter was weaning we loved the slow cooker as the meat would be so lovely and juicy she could eat it without needing to blend or anything.

Mmm. Turkey too big for the slow cooker but after all the comments I`m now thinking of doing my usual roasts in it. Do you do it like a pot roast with a little bit water and veg?

never had a dry turkey ever ! i use frozen turkey as well

put your hand up its neck whole and seperate the skin from the meat carefully .... then stick a packet of softened butter under the skin over the meat yes ? ... then a smear of butter over the whole bird ... slat n pepper ... cake the whole bird in bacon strips ... espesh the legs ... stick two oranges inside it ... add a little white wine to the baking tin and a small cup of water ... double cover the legs in foil .. then cover the whole thing in two layers of foil ... cook slow all night on a low heat basting every hour ... bingo! juicy bird ! lol

i cooked it on low overnight in the slow cooker and then i crumbled a chicken oxo cube over the skin and browned it in the oven for an hour....lovely
