How do you cope with working with a smelly lazy co worker?

I don't want be rude to the said person, but how does one deal with the situation without it turning into a fist fight or me getting thrown under the bus?

Water doesn't cost much and deodorant would help a lot, but some people really don't give a hoot!

Christmas is near: Smellies gift hamper from secret Santa!?

Tell them.

give me a smelly over a moaner any day

Depending on where you work, personal hygiene is actually a requirement if working with the public, ie in a shop. Speak to your manager about it and they should do something about it!

+1

Burn them.

/thread.

Just say blimey what is that smell ... Can u smell anything mate ..... Lol

It's possible the person has no idea of their "condition"

Wouldn't it be a better world if it was so easy to have a quiet word in their ear away from others "as a friend" that others have made concerns

The only issue (although it shouldn't be as we are all equal) is if it's a man telling a woman then it becomes a more sensitive area to tackle and I would avoid.

Be honest and tell them. They might not know.

We have an aquaphobe in our work, we all tell him he stinks on a daily basis. He is also the nastiest human being I've met in my life, he is incredibly easy to wind up, which I thoroughly enjoy doing every day.

What do you do with a smelly moaner?

Edit: .....'ear-ly in the mor-ning'

Is he on FB? we could all message them and tell them for you.

In all seriousness, I think the most tactful way to approach this delicate situation is to approach your co-worker during a quiet time in the working day and stand there spraying Lynx Africa onto them until the can is empty, follow them around if necessary.

u need tell your employer , its their duty to tell him, without u being mentioned . They should have a procedure, to inform the person .

Just be honest with him, he may thank you for it

your employer, had a legal requirement to address the situation, most contracts in the small print. mention personal hygiene

Typed note

Dear stinker,

You may have a medical condition which you are unaware of but you have a very strong body odour.

Perhaps a visit to your GP and a look at your grooming products effectiveness may help. It would also be a good idea to check your laundry is being washed properl y and regularly.

This note isn't meant to embarrass or insult you but for you to realise that you have a personal hygiene problem which needs to be addressed.

Best wishes, a friend.

Op, living in damp conditions can also make clothes honk to high heaven, similar to a fishy foot odour, so it may not necessarily be poor hygiene.

Mm, most of the regulars know I teach teenagers, often rather ripe boys. I have often had a chat with one or other of them, discussing the fact that their current deodorant is letting them down and a brand switch is a good idea.

As a form tutor, I bought all of my male tutees Lynx gift sets. Sneaky eh!

True, but my manager has a personal requirement to avoid any difficult situations and to watch movies on his laptop, obviously these important duties take president over something as trivial as 30 other people having to suffer the stench of someone who can't be bothered to get washed

No wonder they call you spaceinvader.

I once knew a guy that stank and was fired after an important customer was on a tour around the workplace and complained about him. He was a nice guy and we repeatedly tried to help him but he wasn't interested. All he had to do was shower in the morning, what's so difficult? I wouldn't dream of going to work without showering in the morning or at the very least the night before.

I've worked in office environments most of my life (IT) and in manual labor type jobs over the last couple of years. The way it is handled is at complete opposite ends of a spectrum, in the office it is a delicate subject that must be carefully handled by management, in my current job it's free licence to tear shreds out of the source of the aroma. Definitely prefer the latter

In either workplace the issue was never resolved, in the office it was resented because it was something you had to tolerate quietly, in my current job it still has to be tolerated but you can air your opinions about it freely.

I supply someone with the most horrendous breathe that I can go near as I'm physically sick, I don't think I need to tell her as I gip in front of her whilst she's talking.

I've gipped 4 times just typing that, god its awful, worse thing I've ever smelt.

I had the same issue with a colleague for about 10 years. Management said it was a medical issue but then the chap wore the same clothes to work for a week, egg stain from Monday's breakfast butty included.

Obviously his clothes were depressed, one of the symptoms is not being able to perform common daily tasks, such as using a washing machine.
