    how fast can you run

just watching stephen hawkings time travel on discovery.

if you on a train doing 100 mph and run down the isle, theoretically you are travelling faster than the train itself therefore you a running at 120mph or so,not bad for a 40 something

but stephen hawking cant run on a train
so on a 100mph train he would be moving at 100mph, math is easy!

Jump inside a train doing 100mph and you will fly at 100mph you also land in the same place, jump out of a train at 100mph and you die.

Jump on the roof of a train and you will move back er can't do that math but you'll be some way back from where you jumped from

I'm sitting here doing nothing and yet I'm moving at 1038 miles per hour

    lol wut?

much more than that numpty, the milky way travels a million miles a day,so 1 million divided by 24 is,fast

Its a kind of nonsense though. Train or not, your orbiting the sun at 65,000 mph, and travelling through the universe at god-knows-what-speed, so big deal!

are we assuming these are british trains, in which case if you run down the train at 100mph you will be going 90mph faster then the train you are on. If my recent experience is to go by! :x:whistling:

Stephen Hawking can finally achieve an erection now that doctors have disabled his pop-up blocker.

I see that Stephen Hawking is ill in the hospital.

Have they tried turning him off and then back on again?

I was going on how fast the other spins on its axis, but it looks like we are moving all over the shop! brb putting on my seatbelt

lol, hawking didn't see that one coming.

or if you're running on a plane you'll be going whatever speed +600mph

Stephen Hawking may be a genius, but he is not setting much of an example to kids by just sitting at his computer all day.

No You Would Be Running At 20 Your Overall Velocity Would Be 120

haha unplug from wall count to 15 then restart

although the real point he was making is,if the train is travelling at the speed of light(and as einstein said you cant travael faster than the speed of light),would running increase your velocity over(the much mentioned speed of light),the answer is no youll be running on the spot ,or something.

Loving the accurate science in this thread ;-)

    unless your clint eastwood

if you run towards an on coming train(A) which is travelling at 100 mph and you(B)are running at 20mph, what is the total speed you are doing, and what speed is the train doing when you and the train eventually meet????

    A) A=80MPH AND B=80MPH
    B) A=100+MPH AND B=100+MPH
    C) A=120MPH AND B=80MPH
    D) A=BELOW 100MPH AND B ABOVE 100MPH
    E) NONE OF THE ABOVE

well newton says you meet at 120mph but i dont know how to work out part b,20 mph sounds daft do ill go for 120--119.99,i would say c but can a human body slow a train by 40 mph?it would be like a fly hitting a windshield

ok, i like your thinking, heres athother 1 if you were running at 20 mph in the same direction as the train and the train at 100mph and it hit you from behind and when hit you were thrown out of the way of the path of the train what speed are you travelling now, and at what speed were you hit,

    100
    80
    120
    or none of the above

You were hit at 80 but propelled to 100

    difference between
a car is going in a straight line towards you when it hits you it is doing 20mph,
you are running at a car at 20mph you hit it straight on

what kind of damage can you expect on both the car and the human body

You were hit at 100mph, the speed the are travelling now is indeterminate.
