How good are Paypal at refunding buyers?

OK, so against my better judgement I bought an item on Ebay (I'm a bit embarrassed to say what as I really should have known better!). It was a reasonable sum of money - enough to be annoyed/upset about!

Well the item has arrived, and of course it's a blatant fake, not what was shown in the photo etc.

I have emailed the seller and been quite reasonable in my request for a refund, but if (or when) they ignore/refuse, how good are paypal at giving full refunds for items significantly not as described?

The seller is paypal verified btw

Not as yet, I've only just received the item this morning so I've tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and email them first and see what their response is (if any). Do you think I should open a dispute straight away?

File a dispute now and you will get your money back, although you will probably have to pay to post the item back to the seller. Good luck.

I had something refunded before and it was pretty painless.

I would file dispute straight away, as I been told they then freeze the amount in the sellers paypal, correct me if I'm wrong

i got refunded and got to keep the item (fake ipod nano - listed as offical ipod)

they donot freeze the money i am in a dispute with some blocke on here whos trying to didle me and i can use it as normal (although i have just gone over the 1,700 limit by EU regs)

Does that mean if the money has already been taken out of their paypal account I won't get it back?
I considered myself to be quite clued up about Ebay as both a buyer and seller but now I feel completely clueless - never been in this situation before!

also when an item neer turned up i filed a dispute and esculated it, the seller paid half the amount into my account, i of course refunded this, but it goes to show they do not freeze the account once a dispute is opened, otherwise the seller would have not been able to put funds into my account (i did win this and had full amount returned)

what was the item???? hope it wernt embarising..... hi mrs ann summers is this a genuine 12" LOL

they froze the money in my account once because the buyer said that the phone i sold them was broken - they filed the compaint a week after recieving the goods (broke it themself), so maybe it's only some case they freeze the money or they may have stopped it as this happened over a year ago

oh no, how are you going to prove they are fake? how much where the boots and how much postage did you pay? if they offer you a refund minus postage you may be better off cutting your losses and returning like i say i had to prove they where fake goods, mind it seems some get a refund without prooving and others dont

I have checked all the guides on ebay about fake uggs, and these seem to match all the criteria for being fake, and comparing them to pictures of genuine UGGs they're definitely not right. They are definitely not the ones that were shown in the listing either.

I was stupid and paid just over £70 including postage. The boots were shipped from China (which was not mentioned in the listing and the postage charge wasn't high enough to make me suspect they were coming from abroad) and I don't want to have to take the hit of returning them to China! The seller is located in the UK, so I don't think they have ever seen the boots.

    I am such an idiot!

if the postage was reasonable i would take the loss and return to the seller at their uk address,(i take it the item location was uk, or seller was uk) thats if they ok a refund. i would still open up a dispute, then if you dont hear back then escualte it to a claim

Thanks everyone, will leave rep for you all.
will keep you updated if interested, so far have sent seller an email and opened a paypal dispute, just gotta wait for a response.....

with my first foray into ebay, i won an auction and the seller not got back to me. i followed up with numerous emails and then contacted Paypal after the allotted period, lodged a dispute, and then was refunded. the seller claimed all my emails had gone into their spam folder.
seems a bit harsh that the onus is put on the buyer to prove the items are fake, but then again if you are getting "a too good a" bargain then it has to be a case of caveat emptor- buyer beware, and exercise caution of purchasing in the first place.
i hope it all pans out in your favour littletiger, i hate people duping others!

thanks julesmay, i agree totally with your sentiments of caveat emptor - just a moment of madness in an otherwise very careful and sceptical ebay career!

I opened a dispute for receiving an empty box in the post having forked out £120. Paypal requested i reported it to the police (which was a pain in itself) but did get my money back some two months later! Alot of hassle in the end so be careful who you buy from etc. Hope you get your money back. Let us know how you get on. Goodluck!
