How has the UK changed in the last 20 years? Is it a better or worse place to live?

I've got to write an essay on how the UK has changed over the last twenty years.
This can include anything and everything from technology, society, finances or anything.
Do you think things are better or worse than twenty years ago?
    All opinions welcome.
    Thank you.

Good point, I think the size of most sweets/choc bars has got smaller hasn't it?

Some things I have noticed over the last 20 years. Not in any order.
travel has become cheaper. Abroad that is.
Food prices have increased in this preiod.
    House prices have risen considerably
    fuel has risen considerably
You will have to mention the internet.

no, your hands have got bigger !

to be honest I blame the internet & technology, its a "I want it now culture, not tommorrow but now", kids rely to much on it, family ways have changed because of it, I know people that post on face book from downstairs to tell their son dinner is ready !!!

When my son wants to go for a pee he insists on pausing the TV, i used to have to wait for the adverts when i was a nipper.

Thats a really good point, wonder how many families feel technology has had a negative effect on family life?

    wrong

wagon wheels are exactly the same size they have always been as said by other poster it your hands that are bigger tho most other sweets have got smaller

Drivers seem more aggressive now - and there seems to be more cars on the road.

More TV channels available but more crap on TV - probably about the same amount of watch-able stuff but spread across more channels.

Thanks to the interweb we have more wealthy Nigerians then ever before.

Yes that seems to be quite an issue whenever you hear the politicians talking, what do you think?

How much of price rises is in line with inflation though? Would have thought food isn't, relatively, much more expensive.

I would pick an area and go into detail on it. So take food. You can talk about prices, laziness spreading ready meal popularity, customer demand meaning more foods are imported to have seasonal foods all year around etc.

Although I suppose 20 years isn't actually that long.

Just talk about the internet and the effect it has had on the world

Can't help but get the feeling that the education system has deteriorated. Seems like they dumb the exams to increase the passing statistics year on year.

Labour (came into power in 1997) used immigration as a method of solving shortages in workers instead of working on and training it's own people to fill the roles.

The number of migrants most charts show are far from the truth, in reality it is significantly more due to illegal immigrants and people overstaying their student visa.

From my perspective this level of immigration is bad.

    - The UK is losing its identity
    - More British citizens are moving abroad
    - The recession stole a lot of jobs from us and now we have too many people to fill them
    - The threat of a "home grown" terrorist attack is and has been high for years now, only a matter of time before another occurs.
    - The lovely halal method of slaughter. (some will argue the animal feels no pain.. stooopid!)
    - As ever there are now more people to take advantage of the open leg benefit system that we have in the UK.

I think the problem with discussing immigration is that as soon as the subject is raised people are often branded racist, just for wanting a sensible debate, thank you for your comments.

The health and safety rules that have been imposed have stopped children having more fun than they used to...like my son's school not allowing football to be played at lunchtime as just one example. everything now needs a risk assessment.

I remember that with my daughter, they banned skipping in the playground because a child slipped over, hurt her knee and the parents sued the school! sad really.

Which is why we have 'health and safety' - because idiots will sue for the slightest thing to make an easy buck.

but who's to blame for this cotton wool society ? ok the americans are the worse at it with their suing culture, but i feel we should have taken a tougher stance on it.

Yeah I have come across alot of cases.People who are tripley immobilised for hours being looked after one to one, after a 10 mph crashand have TERRIBLE neck pain. Yet once they are told their x ray is clear off they go turning around smiling and looking forward to their 3 grand pay out

I totally understand and agree with what you say about the way NHS staff are treated, I was unfortunate enough to have to go to A & E after an accident and could not believe the way 'patients' were abusing the staff, who are just there to help them.
