How long do you wait until you report an unpaid item on ebay?

Hi everyone,

I have an auction that ended on the 27th of December that was won by an ebayer with 0 feedback.

I sent the invoice the same day, and they asked me a question about the item the day after.

I then sent them a message asking about payment on the 1st. And I have not heard from them since.

How long would you leave it?

I also have questions about sending a second offer and reporting an unpaid item.

From what I can make out, if I report an item has not been paid, it goes through an ebay channel where they ask for payment on my behalf, and it goes through it's processes and I can claim the Final Value fee back.

Can I still claim the Final Value Fee back AND send a Second Chance offer?

How easy is it to send a Second Chance offer? And will it allow the person who "won" the item to leave me negative feedback?

Many many thanks in advance!

dinosteveus will no doubt be able to answer you 100 % but i believe a second chance offer ids pretty straight forward and is a seperate transaction so you can do both this and claim back fees, its simple just select the second chance offer on the item and it then gives the bidder a certain amount of time to decide if they want to accept

You can report an unpaid item dispute thingy at some point after the auction, I'm not sure about the exact timing but if you try to do it now it will tell you how long you have to wait. I'd keep trying to contact the "buyer" and if they don't respond in time then file the dispute.

DON'T give a second chance offer until this dispute is closed, otherwise the original "buyer" could contact you after you've sold the item to someone else and you'd be in trouble then.

I was going to thinking about sending something 7 days after my last message, but was tempted to do it tonight.

I don't believe there is much help on ebay about it all! I have looked, and it's not that impressive!

I didn't think about not sending a Second Chance offer during the dispute! That could have been nasty! Thanks!

no - try to do it now. It won't let you (it's too early) but it WILL TELL YOU how long you have to wait before you can file it.

1) Seller files an Unpaid Item dispute
Sellers can report an Unpaid Item up to 45 days after the transaction date (i.e. the date when the buyer commits to buying the item and the seller commits to selling it). Usually the seller must wait seven days after a listing closes to file an Unpaid Item dispute. However, in the following exceptional cases, the seller can file a dispute immediately:

That's what ebay says, so I could. I just don't like sounding nasty! lol

Yes you could have ended up in a hideous situation which would have been "your fault" from Ebay's perspective.

Unless you satisfy the circumstances then just wait until the 7 days is up, then file it. It's not nasty, and Ebay won't send them an offensive email - it will just explain in no uncertain terms that they MUST pay immediately or suffer the consequences ;-)

I thought you said "hillarious situation"!

Ebay only seem to care about the money they make and not help anyone! That's the impression I get from most people I talk to about it! So I wouldn't be surprised if I had done that they would have left me to fend for myself!

I do know this is wrong, but I almost want to set up a "fake" ebay auction whereby I get someone I know to do a listing that no one else would bid on, make sure I win it, and then file one of these so I know what happens!

I hope you're right though!

I've had this happen and I ended up being refunded ALL of the Ebay costs associated with the auction, and I was then able to re-auction the item. The only thing annoying was that I had to wait a couple of weeks to get it sorted.

Where you run into trouble is if you've posted the item before the seller pays you, and then they don't pay you. In that instance, Ebay won't reimburse you coz its your own stupid fault for posting the item LOL

7 days, isn't it? report after 7 days then they will try contact the buyer, if they don't respond to them in another 7 days you'll get your fees back etc.

LOL I wouldn't do that - you'll run into a lot of trouble because you'll have been a non-paying bidder and I think it's a case of 3 strikes then you're out (banned)

Original Poster

Thanks Starlet, but do you know if I can still offer a Second Chance Offer afterwards if they don't pay?

I know I'm asking a lot if "if" questions, but I just want to make sure!

I think so, but if not you can re-list the auction

Original Poster

I wouldn't do it, but that's just me being curious.

I would only do a 1p auction! I wouldn't go mental! I would pay it though just to see what happens on that scale etc!

And as if by magic, someone else has just bought something from me, again 0 feedback, they only joined today, have made sure their feedback is private and it's quite an expensive item they've bought! *shudders* I just have the feeling that this is going to happen again!!!

If I were you, I'd worry about this IF this buyer doesn't pay you.

True, they could be messing around with a new ebay account.

However, if they're a computer novice (more likely with a low feedback score) they may not have checked their email for a couple of days. If they're unfamiliar with the whole Ebay process it may take a wee bit longer to get the transaction completed.

Has the auction finished? If not, cancel their bid.

How can 0 feedback be 'private'?

Original Poster

I know I'm probably being harsh, and everyone has to start somewhere on ebay etc, and the points you make are valid, it's just annoying they seem to pick on me!

It was a Buy It Now, so can't cancel their bid sadly!

I think feedback is private where it won't show what was said, who by and for what item, but their score can be recorded - if you get me!

maybe if they are new, they are just lagging due to learning the ropes? oh and was it electrical by any chance? mobile phone? careful, this could be a scam

Lou! You mind-reader! A phone that they want to be sent to........yes, you've guessed it! Nigeria!

How the hell do I get out of this?!

they can make their feedback private no feedback ratings at 0 can be some one who has had 4 transactions and 2 of them were negative

report it to ebay, they will investigate it, file a dispue after the allocated time, you will get fees refunded

if it was a buy it now you cannot send a second chance offer cos there wont be a bidder below!

relist it

you get out of it by saying you do not post to nigeria then when you are claiming your fees back state that the buyer has asked you to post the item to a country you do not post to

this happened to a friend of mine recently, they were asked to send it abroad when the auction stated uk only, when they were suss the 'buyer' then tried to con them by sending a fake paypal email saying they had made payment and asked fr the phone to then be sent to a london address, the email was forwarded to paypal and ebay, the user was banned and fees refunded

Thanks Lou,

The original post was about an auction, and then during this thread, my phone sold which was on buy it now!

I'll wait 7 days then! I'm not going to list it again because I'm worried this will happen again, I will probably post it on the "For Sale Or Trade" board!

make sure you state that you will only post to uk, you can also use the option of pre approving bidders, but that may put off potential buyers, or state buyers with feedback ect

email the details to ebay, stating that you believe that it is a scam, they will investigate it

try the Goofbay forums there are lots of ebay experts on there

On the invoice address, it is a UK address! Not a complete one though as I've checked the postcode and technically, it's missing the first and second line!

They said they will send it to Nigeria, and they want to pay by wire transfer!

I also technically didn't say I would only post to the UK in the listing. I did choose the UK check box and that was the only one I checked. So surely that would suffice! I hope so anyway!

they may ask for your bank details...dont give them to them!!

Original Poster

Oops! Too late! lol! Only joking! That would be the last thing I would do! What a kurfuffle! As Lou would say to Andy! lol

Don't accept payment and don't post it. Contact Ebay quickly and ultimately just relist the item. I wouldn't even bother to contact the buyer in Nigeria any more, its 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% definitely a scam.

How do I contact them exactly? Sorry for being SO thick, but that's just me!

there should be contact option in the help section
