How long should a boiler last?

    Banned
I bought my house new in 2004, heating system and boiler fitted, tested and working by Barratt Homes

However 4 years on (after its 2 year warranty) the system has gone tits up

My mate who is a plumber tells me that today you cannot expect a boiler to last much longer than 5 years, at £1000 a throw. I think this is rubbish. Especially in the light that at my last house my boiler was 20 years old and still going strong :-(

yeah apparently these new one have a life expectancy of 8 years, hence why BG warranty to replace is less than 8 years, you got any cover on it

Depends on how you look after it - was it ever serviced.

our previous boiler lasted four and a half years :x the replacement set us back £1000, but we have taken out that extra warranty thingy on it!

The previous one to both these lasted 25 years!

One in our old house lasted 26 years and is still going apparently. The new house - previous owner had new one fitted in 2003, we moved in Nov 2007 and it went wrong Dec 2007 so had to have new one. As my mum says "The don't make em like they used to".....

Nope, I've approached Barratts to try to get them on the 'Sale of Goods Act' to say its no longer fit for purpose, and that they have installed defective goods (which isn't too far from the truth as far as barratts are concerned)

I switch on the water/heating and it fires then goes into reset mode where the boiler is active but the gas isn't lit so the water doesn't get heated :-(
