How long to train for a marathon?

As title, can train 2-3 times a week. Would I be ready for May.
I'm 40 and not as fit as I used to be. At the minute, could probably run about 3-4 miles.
Any good websites or advice welcome.

A few years ago one of my children's friend's dad went out jogging, to get ready for the Great North Run

    He never returned

3-4 miles sounds like you are in pretty good shape already - most people will struggle to run a mile at a decent pace/without stopping!

Took me 3 months to build up to 6-7 miles from only being able to do 400m odd at a time. That was 3-4 runs a week over varying distance and terrain. Planned to do a half marathon next year but falling down a large pothole whilst jogging with the dog seems to have put paid to that

    great confidence boost that is

Sadly he died of a heart attack

His wife got worried as he did not return and phpned the police.

He had been taken to the hospital in the meantime, so they had to tell her the sad news

LOL at Forest Gump. Had been thinking similar but hadn't the nerve.

I normally start off with some snickers and then get the smarties before I even think about a marathon.

gl and start slowly is my advice

    Hi
My husband has completed 4 Flora London Marathons.

He joined runnersworld.. you ought to check it out.

He normally trains at least 8 months leading up to a London..and hes very fit.

Follow a proper training plan, run day, rest day etc and dont over do it.

Do you know brisk walking is as effective as running? with less damage done to your joints...

I know which option I would prefer however if this a goal that you want to do the matathon then good for you.

get a health check up first..get yaself a heartmonitor for when your running .

I think you'd struggle in 3 - 4 months and with the limited training you can put in. Mind nothing to stop you trying, worst you can do is walk. By not as fit as you used to be do you mean that you used to be fit, or that you used to be lazy and now your mega lazy and unfit. Failing that I'll do it for you in your name and you can impress your mates with your good time and certificate. (I done this 2 or 3 years ago for my missus). She done a 1/2 Marathon in 91 mins (4 months pregant she was)

lol at pregnant wife ! Used to be fit, but age catching up on me a little. Think it could be a midlife crisis. Not going to commit to anything yet, but will be at the gym this week hammering the treadmill. Thanks to all.
