How many hours of driving lessons needed...?

How many hours of driving lessons are needed to be ready to pass a test?

I know it is different for other people but what is the recommended average? Thank you.

This is a bit of one of those 'how long is a piece of string' questions. It really is all about the learner and the tutor. I had three lessons with my dad, and passed within a week. He learned from his dad, and passed on his 17th birthday. My brother learnt from dad also and took two years! Our sister took proper lessons and needed about 20 if I remember rightly.

Average most people quote is around 35-50 hours.

i learnt 7 years ago and was told it was around 30 to 40

i think 30-40 hours is average but like you say it varies. ive just put in for my test and by the time it comes i will have had 117 hours!!!!

i would say for a quick learner about 20, if u have access to a car would speed it up

they say it's one lesson for every year you have been alive
plus 10

I was always told you need a 1 hour lesson for each year of your life .. so a 20 year old will need 20 hours of lessons

took me 14 hours so it really does depend on how natural driving comes
i had a 50cc then 125cc bike's at 16 n 17 so this helps a lot with road sense, gears and rules of the road

It varies depending on the learner, It took me about 26 lessons, I'd mastered how to control the car in my first lesson, Was just the reversing and observation I had to work on.

My uncles had about 80 lessons and failed his 3rd test not so long a go.

prob about 15 actual lessons and loads of practice if u have a car available

none! its my first test ive put in for

Well depends if your taking a test in a manual or auto. I would say on average 20 lessons are needed before you pass, though some people get the hang of it after 6 or 7 lessons.

Sounds about right, I had about 26 lessons when I was 21, I don't think I needed that many, My first test got cancelled because the weather so had to wait a few more weeks but carried on having lessons.

that was back in the olden days
I was 21 when i learnt and had 29 lesson but thats because i had to wait a month for a test

The average is around 25 hours. It helps a lot if you can use somebodys car for practice.

haha tell it how it is!

my main problem has been hesitancy, especially at roundabouts and judging gaps in narrow roads, you know like if theres an oncoming car and you have cars parked at the side. i seemed to stick at the same place and not improve for ages too and felt like giving up at times. it was very frustrating. im really good at my maneuvers though

4 lessonS and passed first time

Thank you all for the reply

I was thinking about booking a block of about 30 hours.. It costs about £500, but if i bought them as i learn it would cost about £600. Fingers crossed i'm a fast learner!! Im sure i will be able to go out with my dad aswell for some extra help

the extra help off dad would help you so much. no one would let me practise in their car so i only had my instructors car once a week. good luck with the lessons

Good luck  also do your theory as soon as you can because if your a fast learner you can't book you test utill you passed the theory and you might want to see how long you have to wait for a test date it got to over 2 month wait in my area when my sister in law was doing hers!

I found 2 seperate lessons a week was good also, i dont think a 2 hour long lesson is good though because when you having a bad lesson its bad for 2 hours!

Thats bad:thumbsup:

I sat my first test after 23 lessons and second at 32 when I passed. They were 1 hr lessons...I was simply too nervous after only 23 and neded to build up my confidence.

Like you say it's different for everyone.

wow - 117 lessons and you havent even had a test. Either you're a really really bad driver or you're getting scammed by your instructor :w00t:

should have about 20-30 lessons before first test unless you're poor at it.

It may be an idea to book only 1 or 2 lessons to begin with, to see whether driving comes naturally to you. If you get the hang of it really quickly, 30 lessons may be too many.

Btw, don't do it, driving costs a fortune!!! :x
