if you just want to recover data would it not be easier to just send the hard drive?

Just take the HDD out & send that. Or better still, buy a HDD enclosure, put the drive into it & copy the data onto new PC.

Where are you from? I'm sure someone on here would happily help you to recover the data rather than pay extortionate amounts.

The drive still boots ,,,,,,,,,,,you could try an XP disk and re-ibstall without formating ,,,the files will go into "windows.old"

or as someone advised, you can pickup a caddy for the drive for a few quid sending a drive off for recovery is really expensive,,,,expect to pay about £500 to a Grand!!!!!

    Good Luck

looks like she has given up an goin to whip everything off. oh well i tried thanks all!!

Could she not reboot with the Vista DVD inside the drive, then opt to restore to a previous state. It sounds as though a Windows Update did not go as planned - perhaps an early shutdown? Try the System Restore utility on the DVD. If she doesn't have one, she could borrow one from a friend. The serial isn't needed for this part.

    Take pictures!

Side note - you only asked less than 2 hours ago. I know I don't have much patience when things go wrong but Jesus Christ. Why lose everything by doing a clean install? Perhaps she deserves to whip everything off after all.
