Hello,
Considering switching from electric to petrol lawnmower.
How much petrol will I have to put in? It'll take me approx 20mins to cut my lawn.
I'm happy to pay the upfront cost but just wondering how much I'll be out for petrol.
Thanks!

The erbauer 36v twin 5ah mower would cut it easily, excellent mower with metal deck 46cm cutting width and over an hour cutting time, no servicing and messing about with petrol and pull starts any more its great, although i don't see how your cutting 3840 square foot in 10 mins, must be over exaggerating a little (edited)

Hardly anything, 5l can of petrol lasts me well over a season.

Just thought I'd add that an electric mower would cost under 40 pence an hour to run (assuming a 2kW mower @ 20p/kWh). Most electric mowers top out @ 1800W though, hence cheaper than 40p/h to run!

Definitely check out the cordless rechargeable mower i mentioned above for that, you could do that twice on one charge, its very good quality has twin 5ah batteries and a metal 46cm deck and recharges in 60 minutes.
Its the Erbauer 36v mower, its excellent not like these cheap cordless mowers that stop spinning when you put them on longer grass or die after 15 minutes, runs over an hour,
Id never go back to faffing about with petrol

Don't think its been mentioned, but petrol lawnmowers should have routine service. I keep this to the minimum, oil change/spark plug every couple of years, but they do go wrong, particularly carburetors, and labour charges for repairs are not cheap. At least they can be repaired, which is green, whereas an electric mower is kind of use until fails then bin it.

Plus of course petrol should not be left in the mower for too long - certainly not from one year to the next!

I switched to a Bosch electric. Got a big back lawn but it still manages so long as you mow regularly and don't let it overgrow. It's nice every spring to know it's going to start for sure. Not quite as powerful or as wide bladed as my old petrol but so much quieter so that compensates.

Water your garden with beer. That will save time and money.

correct, after my last cut of the year i let it run out of petrol.

Yeah doesn't cost much at all. It takes me over an hour to cut my grass every week from late spring- autumn and I fill a 5l can every few months
  12. Avatar
I would say about 10l a year to be safe. It really depends on how much you actually cut it.

If it takes you 20mins with electric it will be even less with a petrol. Takes 2 hours to cut our grass and uses less than a litre. They are surprisingly frugal.

To fill up about £5 and lasts whole summer

£5 does me for the whole grass cutting season. Decent size garden once a week.

I guess it all depends on the size of the lawnmower - if we assume it's a self propelled walk behind they usually have a 1 litre tank. Petrol is about £1.50/L, I'd expect at least 2 x 15 minute runs on 1 litre on a 4 stroke engine. Longer on a 2 stroke, but with the added inconvenience of needing to mix oil in. I guess it all depends on how frequently you mow your lawn. The same size mower in electric doesn't have the same power as petrol, but it does have the convenience of lower maintenance (you should still clean it after a cut though and you'll need the blades sharpened).

Thank you... over the course of a year it's not much of a difference by the sounds of it (although we all like to save money!!)

Petrol mowers have much bigger hidden costs though: they'll need servicing from time to time to keep them reliable and modern petrol 'goes off' after a few months so first start in the spring can be a problem (make sure you drain the carburetor after the last cut too or it will turn into a 'varnish' over time and wreck the carb. Finally make sure your mower is compatible with E10 fuel as that will damage it if not designed for it.

You can get battery operated mowers, personally for a lawn like that I'd want stripes! However it looks like a Flymo might be an easier option at the front...

I probably don't mind paying up to £200 for a lawnmower...but if that's the case I want it to last a good 10 years and for cost to be minimal to keep it going.

Maybe I'm cheaper than most people haha

We have a lawnmower just outside the garden shed door, it runs for ages and ages and ages on a just one of litre of fuel although it is not under any great load.

(upsets the feckless neighbour who stays up all night making a noise and then tries to sleep during the day)

But it seems we are allowed to use a lawnmower, even in February, a normal activity.
