So being me yesterday i got 2 bags of sand out of the car for some rendering i needed to do and put them in my hallway. Went back to lock the car and then came back, bent over to pick both bags up and...... twang, my back pinged quite bad. I felt ok for about 5 mins, went outside to have a ciggy, but then came over all dizzy and felt really hot and clammy and nearly passed out. I laid down on the sofa ive got in my kitchen and within 5 mins i couldnt move my lower half. The missus called the doc who told me to stay still until he could come out, checked my for numbness and pins n needles and eventually put me on a high dose of Diazipan and Ibruprofen.

So today i still cant move my lower half. I managed to painfully crawl on my hands and knees to bed last night (took me about 15 mins of agony). Im typing this from the other halfs laptop in bed and im so peed off with myself for doing something so stupid as to bend over the wrong way. I am in agony when i move the slightest bit down below, and to top it off ive got 2 kids who wanted to enjoy their summer hols with their dad - which now seems a bit of a way off coz the doc said it could take weeks to get back to normal. Ive got a back specialist booked in for Saturday to come around and see if she can tweak a few things but we shall she :-( Another ironic thing is that ive just had an email saying the 50" plasma i ordered is coming this Friday - LOL i cant even lift the paper let alone a 50" tv !!

So then, im thoroughly bored, peed off with myself and confined to bed not being able to do anything. Moral is always be careful and dont take your body for granted. Im only 38 for gods sake - but at the moment i feel like 60 !!

nasty mate, should ensure to lift correctly!
im only 21 but got to look after your back...you cant replace it!

ive been shifting a lot of soil for some ground work ive been doing and the bags are 25-35kg each and theres about 175 of them now! So probably a good 5tonnes roughly, which ive shifted on my own! So i know what its like!

Another thing is is actually a cracking day out there today. Been cloudy and drizzly for best part of two weeks then i do this and it looks like we're finally gonna get some sun this summer hols. Bloody typical :-(

Sorry to hear about your back I know what it's like to be stuck in bed all day/night for weeks and I feel sorry for you.. I hope the specialist can work some magic on Saturday

Never mind your back, you'll have to endure the mind-numbing prospect that is daytime TV - think Jeremy Kyle, Loose Women (they hate men) etc. I pity you for that!!!

get someone to wheel you out into the garden smother you in sun cream and turn you over regularly lol 8-)

Looks like your post count is going to go through the roof then!!

Seriously, I hope that you get sorted in double quick time - that sort of pain and disabling is a misery.:friends:

Exactly how did you attempt to lift the bags, so others can learn the wrong way.

You didn't lift from the legs bending the knees?

this story may or may not cheer you up, maybe just a little bit

my dads got a bad back from a car accident and about 3 years ago he was to go to the maldives with my mum in the june. He always does these stretches in a morning in the shower which his Osteopathy told him to do each morning. Then one morning he was stretching, bang, was on the floor of the bathroom (was quite funny until i realised how much pain he was in) and he couldnt move. Then his back went into some kind of spasm and he was literally screaming with the pain so my mum called the paramedics but they couldnt do anything obviously but lifted him (reluctantly) onto his bed. he was in bed for 8 weeks, and when he managed to move he needed a walking stick.

moral of this story is, be careful kids.

sure he wasn't trying to do something else, someone should have told him to get his bottom set of ribs removed first :whistling:

I hope to god ive just pulled a muscle or something and will be back in some form of action, be it just being able to stand up, in a few days. Until then ill most probs get banned on here for spamming threads and talking sheet coz ive got nothing else to do LOL.

i didnt post that to say you'd be bed bound for weeeeks and weeks cos you wont be. has your back been dodgy in the past? my dads is and has been for about 20 years so thats why he got it so bad

Man, sympathies. Back care is something I learned the easy way because of a guy used to work with in a call centre who would regularly have to perform various yoga-positions and the like whilst taking calls because of some accident he once had. Watching a 6'6" man lying flat out on his back or contorted superhumanly around his chair whilst talking a middle-aged women through opening her sytem up and swapping RAM sticks over made quite an impression on me. Good luck with the recovery, dude.

deadduck dont worry i was just kidding. But funny you should say coz just lately ive noticed when i get out of bed in the morning the crack of my back and pelvis has been kinda stiff. Hard to explain but its the same sort of pain im in now but much less severe. Usually i stretch and its fine for the rest of the day. Obviously a weak point and its just been pushed over the edge this time with something so stupid as to not bend my knees when picking up heavy objects. I guess you could say the warning signs were there from what ive just wrote... but i never really paid that much attention to it coz i just thought ive been sleeping funny or needed a new matress, ours is well over 10 years old now.

Funny you should mention that... just spent the past half hour looking at a good place to get one from :-)

Try to scrounge some Tramadol from the docs. Works for me ;-)
