How should the licence fee be spent?

    Banned
Should it focus on programmes for ratings, or spend more on edgier dramas that might not attract as big audiences?

    Is the balance just right?

The license fee should be spent on beer. The TV tax can go to hell.

+1 Cant really argue with that.

What I do object to though is paying over-rated presenters multi-million pound contracts who then get a 3 month paid suspension (holiday) and contributes very little to the audience. Total waste of tax payers money (again).

In this era of technology I fail to see the need to pay a license fee now as TV and radio can be streamed online for free without the need for signal receiving device. so why are we still paying for this carp?

I think it is just right as is,I watch many documentaries and factual programmes on iplayer and i know that if they went for ratings they would all disappear,There are enough Tv companies chasing ratings,If we were to go that route then they should scrap the fee and let them advertise,Then all our tv would be like america,

The license fee should be scrapped..

    END OF STORY!

True and I largely agree with you, but in this day and age the TV license is forced upon us. The TV part should be subscription based as I only use my TV to play my 360 on. I rarely watch any programmes online and I can listen to the radio online as well. So why should I be forced to pay for something that I dont use? :?

i think once analogue tv is cut off totally and you have to get bbc through a provider ie sky or virgin
they should be able to turn off bbc and not pay for the tv licence

althought those on freeview would still have to

They show so many repeats that I sent them a photocopy of last years cheque

Do you have Sky? They cater very nicely for those of us that would rather learn something than watch Generic Reality Show #929. Check out ]this, for example. Loads of stuff to be watched in your own time. Check out the Sky listings, and you'll find loads more when you're sitting by your telly. It's great.

And, remember, although the 18-45 entertainment market might be the big one that the mainstream TV channels shoot for, no business would work to serve only the biggest market, especially when that market is only the biggest singular market, and might not even be a majority of viewers. Your documentaries are equally as safe in the hands of a company that asks for your money, as they are in the one that just takes it.

I agree with the docs bit, because they generally don't bring in ratings which is what commercial tv is based on.

I used to firmly support the licence fee until the Brand/Ross debacle. Caving into the Daily Mail made me lose all respect for them and I seriously think they should become a subscription-based service. Maybe carve off the news because it's still a great institution around the world but everything else (EastEnders, **** daytime reality stuff etc.) is paid for by subscrition.

Then move towards less shows, but higher production. Try and provide creative freedom like HBO does in America and take chances.

No ads in the true sense of the phrase, or no ads, except for other BBC shows and channels, DVD, CD and book releases of BBC stuff, and the occasional issue of the Radio Times?

there is far to much rubbish on the bbc ,, way to many "reality "shows and dodgy game shows ,
but the same is true of all tv channels ,, to much repeats and total twarp on ,,
i rarely watch anything ! ive got my 12 shows i watch programmed in to sky and watch those skipping the adds when it suits me .. adverts are a waste of my time ,, id rather skip them and use the time to read a book !
i also think sky has a cheek to charge so much when there are adds every 5 mins , sometimes straight after the beginning credits !

Couldn't agree more with that, they skank you for £20+ a month for a basic package, then show carp loads of adverts? how do they get away with that? It should be one or the other, subscription OR adverts.

I don't know if that's such an issue anymore considering you can record the show and skip them.

Valid point, I can't watch anything on TV these days, I have to sky+ it and watch later. But not everyone has that function.
