ah, the world we live in. I wish i was alive in the 70s the worst thing is, it's only going to get worse!

Nice post, shame we can't go back to some of these common sense approaches/attitudes.
Makes me think of Life on Mars - what a great series for highlighting the Political Correctness overkill.

We all tend to tread on egg shells these days to avoid offending a small minority or getting arrested for the most bizaare things. Read an article in a newspaper once about a 10 year old getting arrested for throwing a party sausage at his neighbour, and because it hit her (that must really hurt) she had him done for assault!!!

My my, how things have changed.

"1972 - 15 year old finishes work and goes to the chippy with his mates only to be shot in the back of the head by a british soldier from a look out post"

"2008 - 15 finishes school and goes to the chippy with his mates, eats bag of chips, plays football and goes home to play on the xbox."

ah, the world we live in. I wish i was alive in the 70s the worst … ah, the world we live in. I wish i was alive in the 70s the worst thing is, it's only going to get worse!

I lived and have memories from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and now the naughties and I wouldn't want to go back to any of the previous decades. They were all good decades where I enjoyed my childhood, teenage years (swingin' 60s) and then a successful career right through to retirement. This career took me to many parts of the world and I am happy to be back in UK for retirement. Those who are always hankering after foreign shores to live in often find actually living there is quite different from visiting. Having said that I do fancy a retirement villa in the Med!!

It's like childhood summers - we only remember (or the media only remembers) the good bits and conveniently cut out the bad parts and there were just as many bad parts as today.

Carrying out family tree research has taught me just how tough times were right through the last century and I now have a lot more respect for what my parents went through and survived whilst bringing up four kids. Medical advancements mean we are more likely to live to a much riper age (I intend to at least) and we all get enough to eat, live in warm houses, have proper furniture, decent clothes and have so much more to occupy our spare time than before. My parents are now into their late 80s and are much better off financially, medically and socially than they were when they were working (farmworkers). My Dad still likes to grumble when he reads about PC in the paper but he never sits down and accepts that none of it actually affects him whereas poverty and struggling to survive did affect him for most of his working life.

Yes, Political Correctness has gone loopy but the problems were always around in different forms - they just didn't get reported as much by the media. The same sort of criminals existed as do today whether they use cybercrime or plain old robbing - they just didn't get reported by the media or weren't found out in the cases of child abuse and the like. Bullying was just as prevalent at school but it was ignored. Some kids fought back and stopped the bullying others just had their whole lives affected - pretty much the same as today except that bullying is recognised and there are attempts to stop it. I could extrapolate that through to some of the other problems too. The current investigation into the childrens' home in Jersey is one that springs to mind.

My partner's family research destroyed a few myths too. Remember the old saying about the Blitz and Dunkirk Spirits? She has personal records of family who went through the Blitz. On one occasion they went back to their house after a raid to find it had been damaged through bombs. The neighbours had been in and relieved them of most of their possession including the coal out of the bunker in the back yard. Apparently that was common - so much for helping one another out. Talking of WWII it is worth remembering some of the heinous acts carried out by some of the participants of this war. At the time there was probably no PC as it was all done for the sake of National Pride. My Dad fought through the Middle East into Singapore during this War and he has many a story to tell which show just how terrible it was. I'd rather have PC any day!!

For Heaven's sake it's time we started living for today and the future and made a bit more of an attempt at sorting out some of these PC problems instead of just whingeing about them. Often they are exaggerated by the media anyway. The Jeremy Vine show is a classic example - I always turn to another radio station when he comes on. Whinge, whinge, whinge but does nothing about the problems - turns them into entertainment.

Okay - I'll get off me soapbox before the flaming starts.
