you will need the sellers bank detail, sort code and account number then depending on how you bank (internet, telephone or branch) you need to contact your bank and tell them you want to transfer £14 into that account number.

Be warned if you dont bank at the same bank as the seller you could get charged and it could also take upto 3 days.

If you are in the same bank it should be instant with no charges.

you can also walk into the bank with the details, pay the money over the counter, i do this regulary at the halifax, i dont bank with them, i just give them the acc no, sort code and they give me a receipt *important you keep that* i guess different banks have diff policies

Make sure you are comfortable with the person you want to transfer too. Ive been conned by the seller who wanted bank transfer as it gurantees payment, it doesnt gurantee goods though

When i have asked to transfer money between my account (one off transfers not standing orders) to a different bank i have always been told there will be an admin charge. To be fair i havent done this for a while (over a year) and i now bank at a different bank.

If this is not the case i stand corrected

From my experience at Natwest, if you do the bank transfer online then it's free. If you go into Natwest with all the details and ask them to do the transfer (to a bank other than Natwest) then it costs around £30.

I don't understand you.
I've been using BACS as a Seller and Buyer for over 5 years and I have never heard of anybody being charged.

That's what I was told in the bank!

There are NO charges for BACS.
CHAPS, where you need an IBAN and BIC number may incur charges but not UK to UK.

Well I don't know the ins and outs of all the types of bank transfers. But when I went into Natwest and asked them to transfer some money to a friend's account they said it would incur a charge of about £30.

I don't know what kind of transfer they were planning on doing, whether it was BACS or not (probably not judging by your replies), but they MOST DEFINITELY said it would incur a charge. This was about 2 years ago BTW.

When I transfer money to another account using my online banking, it's free! :w00t:

Flippin eck, £30 two years ago, that must be around £50 now. :giggle: :whistling:

I regularly do bank transfers from my Abbey online account and there is no charge.

I have to say though when I actually went to an Abbey branch and asked if I could do online bank transfers they said there wasn't the facility to even do that !!

The UK is so 'backward' with Banking :-(
Most Europeans never use Paypal etc, just Bank Transfer. (Ebayers)

Isn't bank transfer banned on Ebay now?

NO.
You ARE covered under ebays standard purchase protection.

Sorry, it's Instant Cash Transfers (like Western Union) that aren't allowed.

My mistake.

No probs

There's nothing intrinsically free about bank transfers. They actually cost the bank money to do (as with all bank transactions really) but most personal current accounts will include a number as free (generally limited if you go far enough into a lot of account t&c's).

I wouldn't be surprised to find out some banks would charge for you to do a transfer in person rather than through your internet banking account.

Bank Transfer is cheaper for the Banks than sending a Cheque.

I haven't found any charges with Lloyds, Nationwide or Smile's (co-op) T&C's. Would you be able to claim these charges back IF you did get charged?
Maybe if you went into a Bank you don't bank with and has nothing to do with the recipients bank, then I can see a charge.

Halifax branches I have seen provide a computer terminal to access your online banking if you wish.
Not providing one in your branch alienates 40%+ of householders without net access at home really tieing up more human resources so backward not to do so.

dino is right unfortunately, banking in the UK is very backward, people relying on rip off merchants like paypal is annoying, waiting 3-4 days for BACS transfers to go through is theft, charging £20 for CHAP payments is just extortionate.

I think banks would charge you entrance into their branches if they could get away with it.

i bank online with a building society and never been charged for bank transfers that i've done

Maybe since the introduction of the FSA banks are not allowed to charge for a transfer anylonger, but as markwillis and I are talking about 2 years ago when we were both told by different banks that a transfer would incur a charge.(I banked with the halifax)

I'm pleased to hear that they don't charge any longer.
