mkv is just extension used for files where the codec is included in the file, it could just as easily be renamed as avi and still work

What is the file name and size?

Tried playing it using something like www.videolan.org ?

Haven't got a file and size as yet, wanted to know how to convert them so they will play on ps3.

Or 360... Theres a program called Super that claims to convert anything to anything else. Not sure how successful it is on MKV as I avoid such useless files ;-)

Been playing them on Media Player Classic with CoreAVC264 codec for over 3years now as they are the successor to DiVX/XViD files which have been the normal standard close on a decade now

i use a program called mkv2vob so i can play them on the ps3 might be worth trying that,

Bear in mind I suspect those all in one programs will take a lovely 1280x720 resolution video and ruin it in bitrate and possibly lower resolution too to get it to the standard a console will play it at.
However I'm sure 360 can do x264 now (shame it wasn't sooner I might of gotten a 360) PS3 i don't know.

Check those links out

To be pedantic, mkv is the successor to avi. Divx/xvid/h(x)264 can be stored in either format

Theres no real reason you can't just demux an mkv and remux it as an avi. (apart from avi filesize restrictions)

mkv is a filename extension not a standard, in a way you are right, so pedantism = x264 is successor because of it's superiority at high definition resolutions, whereas xvid is best at most standard resolutions, but then xvid is that took over from svcd/vcd, so we'll see.

Of course its a standard.

Matroska aims to become THE standard of multimedia container formats. It … Matroska aims to become THE standard of multimedia container formats. It was derived from a project called MCF, but differentiates from it significantly because it is based on EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), a binary derivative of XML. EBML enables the Matroska Development Team to gain significant advantages in terms of future format extensibility, without breaking file support in old parsers.First, it is essential to clarify exactly "What an Audio/Video container is", to avoid any misunderstandings: * It is NOT a video or audio compression format (video codec) * It is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file.

yeah sorry i meant codec not container, you win the pedantism contest lol

I convert them to an mp4 for use on the ps3 using a programme called gotsent.

very fast and easy to use

fomat factory, it does everything and its free

You are correct in a way though, it's not really a standard at the moment. It's more of a free for all. it is getting more uniform, but as you say, time will tell;-)
