How to find a european map to view offline on an android phone whilst abroad

    Hi

We are travelling to Italy tomorrow on a cheap Ryanair flight and just wondering if anyone can advise how to view maps on the phone without being connected to the internet whilst abroad.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

also would like to know, i went to france with my desire expecting to use its GPS and i couldnt as i had no signal! lol

dont think you can, but if oyu could then it would be great and would not need internet access on phone to download map data

maybe you could just google for a map of where your going, save it to your phone as a picture?

    something like this?
    italiantourism.com/pdf…pdf
you should be able to view pdf's on your phone so google italy pdf maps for others

Global Positioning is what it says and is available worldwide. The only thing that should stop your signal is buildings or tree cover. If you travel a vast distance inbetween turning it off and on it can take a long time to figure out where you are. You should leave it outside away from trees and buildings for about 10 to 20 minutes to get a fix.

Check you have full gps and do not have it setup to give your position using the mobile network.

I think its the facy that the built in Android Navigation software uses the cloud to pull the maps. Without a internet connection you can't really do much with it.

GPS is nothing to do with mapping as such. It just tells you where you are on the planet. With this information you can plot your position on any map. Obviously it is much more useful to have mapping inlcuded, but it is still useful without. You can also with a little work get your mapping via wifi beforehand if you have a specific journey in mind. Not sure it will be long before you can download a country or area at a time.

Yes I understand what GPS is.

Just its useless for navigation without built in maps or a connection to a maps database

We are spoiled by electronic navigation software. The fact is that both walking and driving I have pre nav software been in situations where if I could just find out my position I could find my way. A gps reading can do this with paper maps. That is why I said it can be useful even without electronic mapping. Granted in real life it is next to useless compared to the cheap alternatives available.

Can't vouch for these maps but worth a try download mapdroid from android market and then add maps of italy.

Thanks for the advice everyone - we had just been taking photos of maps to look at on the phone but I thought there must be an easier way! I will have a look at mapdroid next!

How do you you use this without a data connection?

The new Maps application for Android caches maps for offline use. So if you navigate to the city where you are going to be and load up everything you want to see it will cache that.

Thanks very much everyone - we found something last night called locus offline maps app for androids so have downloaded and saved some maps on the phone of the areas we know are going to. Will take a look at the other suggestions for the next trip

Slightly irrelevant, but you used to be able to save map files onto Nokia phones so that when you went away you had all the maps you needed already stored ... and just used the inbuilt GPS.

Handy feature, should be an easier way for Android.

As has al;ready been recommended. Mapdroyd.

You can download maps for anywhere you want. i used them myself wheni went over to italy last summer. very good.
