How to haggle buying a used car?

How do I determine the current market value for the car according to its mileage? Is 10% off a reasonable discount to ask?

The car I am looking at is a 2011 Toyota Prius top trim T Spirit around 80k mileage advertising for £9,000. Thank you.

wow that's a lot of money for a car with that mileage. there's a black 2008 on Fleabay with 15.000 on the clock for 7k

Where are you looking? Auto trader, eBay, Gumtree?

    That's too expensive..

webuyanycar quote would give absolute lowest they would laugh at.
Parkers, autotrader, and Ebay sold prices should give a good guide on market value.
Demand for Prius can be strong as taxi drivers want them, though I would say £7-8k

don't worry about making a cheeky offer car dealers buy low sell high , they try and make fat margins, if you knock a few grand off its a starting point. They always put on a artificial high price initially.

Or a private seller has unrealistically high expectations, or credit to pay off.

Mileage isn't the only thing you can look for to determine market value. Condition, age number of previous owners, previous MOT fails and service history are all factors to take in to account. You can use any of these to haggle the price down too. For example if it's due a service and it hasn't been done, that's money off as you'd have to spend that anyway.

Good advice. Just to clarify its usually better if it has had fails for things like brakes exhaust suspension etc as it will have had new parts fitted. If its been welded etc then avoid.

There are exceptions tho for example i do mots so i check my car first and do everything including advisorys so it gets clean sheet every year. I keep reciepts for every part tho so check service history and reciepts for work

Timing belt is very important if it is a belt thats on it alot are chain driven now

I'm looking at Autotrader. I've never used Gumtree/ebay for cars before... Not sure if they're trustworthy.

Will be needing it to use as a taxi hence has to be less than 6 years old. Prefer to go for the T-spirit as the driver is so used to having a reversing camera.

I thought £9k is good value for the car? Seems about the going rate on Autotrader for a prius t spirit 2011 or newer.
I'm just trying to figure out how much I can haggle down for. Obviously I'll point out any defects to prove my point. But is asking £1000+ off too much?

If you don't ask you don't get, just make them an offer , the worst that can happen is they say no !
Have a look at we buy any car (its free valuation) and that will give you an idea how much they paid for it (if its a dealer)

If it's the one at Cargiant, in NW London, forget it. You won't get anything knocked off them. The prices are fixed and priced to sell.
