How to stream video from PC to XBMC?

I've searched for this everywhere and i can't seem to find a clear answer. rediron i think it was helped me out with this ages ago but i couldn't get it to work, all of the videos i have are in a folder on my desktop and i have enabled that to share, it has got the little hand on the icon, which i presume means it's set to share. Only problem is i can't see it on my xbox, when xbmc loads, i go to videos but i can't understand how i access it.

    Any pointers? Rep given obviously!!

what i do is put the videos in user > videos > sample videos. then all you need to do is go to the dashboard > media > choose source > pc and from there you should be able to see you videos. These steps are for vista, would imagine its fairl similar for xp. Is your xbox directly connected to your computer????

I have to login to my computer to see the shares over my network, is that not right?

    To OP:

    Got computer to router
    Xbox to router

Go into videos on XMBC have to create new source first and select network drive then enter username and password, the way I've got vista set up (secure) won't allow access without username and password.

Are you talking about the xbox 360? because it's xbmc installed on an original xbox, so there's no 'media' section, just videos, pictures, music, programs etc.

When you go into Videos there is an 'add source' option, maybe it's something to do with that, but i haven't the foggiest what i would need to put in there

yeah you can do it that way aswell. I have my xbox connect to the laptop which uses the wireless on that since my router is too far away. are you using vista????

You have to set it up on the xbox end too. Select options when in video folder (title button on remote or white button on controller I think) then edit source, add network place and browse for the shared folder.

Ding ding ding, give that man a housepoint!! Thanks loads :-D:-D:-D:-D

If you go into video you should have an option for network share or something similar, I don't have an xbox here at the moment so i'll do a quick google for you to find the exact menu you want

i see now, my apologies, thought you had the 360. Yeah do that and follow lumoruk's advice and create a new source, making sure that your logged in on the computer

does it work :w00t: explain please can't be that easy. I've got a USB adapter for the Xbox ports.

If you don't fancy wireless (it requires installing linux ect) you can always use a pair of power plug adapters

It's two plugs, you plug one in the mains socket next to your router and one in the mains socket next to your 360 / PC / PS3 etc

You then run an Ethernet cable from your router to one plug, then from the other plug you run an ethernet cable to whatever you want to use it for

Basically it turns your mains ring into one big Ethernet cable, they're useful for when you don't want a long wire running round your house or can't use wireless

    They're called homeplug adapters too

why not just buy a cheap router for around £20 and use it as a bridge most modern routers will have bridging capabilities just check the spec i know someone posted one on amazon a few months back for about £18 connect the 360 to the new router and your upstairs router should see it don't ask me how to connect it it will be down to which router you have but it pretty simple.

This looks simple enough, if i have a wireless USB adapter in the PC would it recieve the signal from the router connected to the xbox and the signal from the router connected to the phone socket?

that will do the trick using the pc as the bridge is a nice cheap way of doing it but it does require the use of your Nic and i dont know how stable it will be i know it was a bit hit or miss with XP but it should be easier with vista as it was designed to intergrate with the 360.
