How to tell what network

My uncle has smashed his iPhone and is waiting until shops are open to get it fixed.

In the meantime he has a very basic old “brick” phone to use. He just wants to pop his sim in it. However he doesn’t know what network it is on. I popped his Tesco sim in but it says invalid - so I guess that rules out Tesco/O2.

Is there an easy way to find out? Instead of trying different sims. Thanks

Really not sure if it works but worth a try?

What's the sim got to do with it? He wants to find out the network of the phone?

i couldn't work this one out myself either.
There is no way to tell apart from trial and error
Power the phone up without a sim in, and check the menus for any built in network apps, such as Virgin Extras, or O2, and for top up numbers.

Alternatively, check O2 website for cheap payg handsets.
