    How would you do it?

    The mission:

I'd like a silent box o' tricks to stream media up to 1080p .mkv containers from my NAS to HDTV. As many codecs as poss. Using XBMC for SD and PS3 Media Server / PS3 at the moment.

What is capable and quiet? DIY job?

    I'm techy

    :? What !!!!!!!!!!

I would get a girlfriend tbh if I were you

    I would !

    Not have a clue sorry:giggle:

I just bought a PS3.. :P But you need to use tsmuxer (which you can easily write a folder based wrapper to do so automatically) to turn them into m2ts containers which the ps3 will play

Don't believe there are any single box hardware solutions out there to do this, you'd probably have to build a mini-itx box with hdmi if you'd rather just have a small box to do nothing but that.

I would go DIY with this, ultimate in custom and upgradeability (if that's a word).

If you have plenty of space its going to be relatively cheap, it gets more expensive if you want to squeeze it into a tiny space

LOL! She's the one that drives the need for a silent, small and all-in-one solution!

Mini-ITX boards haven't got the raw power yet, have they?

Na I don't I reckon you should go for a skate one.

I just use mkv2vob and put them onto an external hdd plugged into the PS3

Is this similar to using the PS3 Media Server? At the mo a laptop streams the media from the NAS

There are mini-ITX boards that take Core 2 Duos although cooling may be tricky, there are also PC cases in the style of home entertainment devices to fit in better with the rest of your equipment.

Personally when in a similar position as yourself I went with a Dell Studio Hybrid as it's small and with the Core 2 Duo 2.1ghz and accelerator card it has enough power for HD video including blu-ray as well as running a virtual domain controller. If you're prepared to compromise a bit on size though you'd be able to get something more powerful for less and probably completely silent.
