How would you fix the sound on this laptop?

Need so advice here, if I may be so bold to ask?

Won and collected an inspiron 1300 laptop off ebay yesterday, knowing that the prev owner had dropped it and there wasn't any sound.

The specs of this machine is a pentium m processor, with a 1gb ram, and 50gb memory - I don't know if this is relevent to the question i'm asking, which is -

"What is the cheapest way to restore the sound?"

I've checked the drivers, etc and all ok there. I have however noticed that the headset input socket has been pushed in....guessing the previous owner was using headsets when she dropped it.

My initial thought was that i will need to replace the sound card, but i've since seen that you can get cheap USB Sound Cards, which will enable the use of headsets and a microphone.

If this is the cheapest option and will work on my laptop, does anyone have any recommendations on where to get the cheapest?

Apologies if this post is all over the place, but i don't know much about these things.

Have you checked if the volume is on mute?

If it isn't, I doubt you can change a soundcard on a laptop, usually built into the motherboard. The USB soundcard is the best way if you have no luck.

Yeah, checked that - didn't know that the soundcard can't be changed, though makes sense looking at the back of the laptop as doesn't seem to have an individual access - rep left.

Check the headset port, it cuts the sound if shorted

The headset port has receeded into the body of the laptop. I have tried connecting headphones, whilst the jack goes in, no sound comes through and the port is very loose. - Rep Left

Looking like a usb sound card is the only option then. Any recommendations?

exact same thing happened with a laptop my dad picked up - headphones socket was pushed in.
I got him a cheap usb soundcard off ebay for a couple of quid. Works fine.

Thanks, will take a look

Open the case up, and check the wire connection between the motherboard and speakers on the case. Dependant on the laptop, you may only have to take the keyboard out and a couple of fittings to check this.

Cheers, but sounds like i could do more damage than good, and would be quite happy to just use headphones.

Which leads me on to my next question, on ebay there are usb sound cards stating a 2.0 usb.
How do i check if i have a 2.0 usb port, or won't it really matter?
I've looked in the device manager, but can't see anything that states 1.0 or 2.0??

Cheers

Flam'in eck i'm getting lazy today - cheers - got one from ebay for 92p delivered, will give that a try - will see if i can rep you again

I have a usb sound card that you can have for a couple of quid to cover postage if you like. I bought it as I had the same problem but my sound suddenly came back for no apparent reason. I've got to nip out now though so will sort it later if you like?
