    HSBC closed my account???

I was shocked this morning when I received a letter from HSBC which says
"We write to advise that we have undertaken a review of your account and having done so no longer wish to provide you with banking facilities and have chosen to end the relationship between yourself and HSBC. Your acoount is to be closed on 23 Oct 2008. (which was yesterday, but it still working apparently)......"

I got no debit or any overdraft on my account. Basically, I didn't do anything wrong with HSBC. (May be I have been getting too much interest from the saving account over years)

Ok, I went to the branch and the officer said as the letter was issued from the Centre Manager. There was a notice sent as a 28 days notice. They can't do nothing. But advised me to called up the complaint line.

Ok, I called up the 0845 complaint line and the gentleman just said. "They (HSBC) have the right to choose which customer they want to do business with. They can close your account for any reason providing they give you 28 days notice. (So? what is the reason?) He said he can't help too much about this"

Ok, I called up the telephone banking 0870 number and asked for the reasons. Still no reason at all. But the gentleman said they will arranged a call back on next Monday. (What about my account? It might be closed at any time...) He said he can do nothing.

Can anyone give me some advice regarding to this situation?

lol. :-D Been here longer than you.

Reported to be moved to "Misc".

Try a call to the Banking Ombudsman to see it they can find out on your behalf, you can also logde a complaint with them for the lengths you have went to in order to ascertain why your account was closed but got no resolve from it and also that HSBC by doing to have put you under undue stress. Consider legal advice as well.

Don't think there's much you can do. HSBC aren't legally obliged to offer you an account. There may be some moral obligation but since when have banks had morals? If they can't make money from you, they don't want you.

You could try Nationwide. I've always found them much more customer friendly than the big four banks. And they're still (theoretically) owned by their members.

I did try Banking Ombudsman's complaint line. The 2nd try is exactly what they said.

if you have direct debits etc..just go to th bank of your choice and ask for an account transfer and they can transfer all your details? if its not too late and your HSBC account closes..

Did you have any money in that account?

If so you will get it back, right?

I still have all my money in my account. And actually the account is still working properly up to now.

Should I wait to see what happen on Monday? or should I transfer all my money to other bank?

Unfortunately they are within their right to do so.

Don't take it to heart. Have fun telling them you were just about to close your account anyway as you'd heard rumours they were about to go bust and that they are all about to lose their jobs!

This is the kind of news (sorry rumour) that could cause HSBC to lose half of their value tomorrow, any takers?

I'll dig out Sky News' phone number in a mo.

    Not a bad idea!

You could try HSBCs internet banking service "First Direct" - I know they used to hand out £100 into your account. Now that would be funny!:w00t:

lol i just got a few jokes look? maybe you can use them on HSBC??

How do you define optimism? A banker who irons 5 shirts on a Sunday.

What do you call 12 investment bankers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.

    Q. What's the difference between Investment Bankers and Pigeons?

    A. The Pigeons are still capable of making deposits on new BMW's

NO, on the letter, they did mentioned " You should now make alternative banking arrangements with another financial institution. This would not include another branch of HSBC"

You could try though! No harm in it. Wouldnt you love the thought of them giving you £100 for your troubles? Did you even know First Direct was owned by HSBC until I mentioned it? (And even if you did - who cares!!!!) :w00t::thumbsup:

Direct debit for what? If you're asking if they do DD, then of course they do. Not sure what you're asking.

Ask HSBC for the details of them (ie account details, amounts and dates) and pass them over. You dont need to "transfer" Then contact the companies that draw and give them your new bank details. HSBC have to give you this info, they can't tell you no!

I know that. The OP is worried they will stop him opening the account though.

First i would do a credit check use credit expert for free for 30 days i had the same problem Received a similar letter say they give notice to close my account it turned out that someone had taken out a credit card in my name and defaulted on the card, hsbc check peoples credit files every 6 months to make sure they have decent customer/low risk customers, because of this default on my credit file (from no fault of mine) thay decided to close my account.
so the best thing you could do is check your credit file to see if anything adverse on there...

    Hope this helps

I didnt know that anyone could check youre credit file without your permission ,i thought it was an offence to do so?

It is rather strange for a bank to turn away business escepially if you aint done nowt wrong.

Not true when you enter into a bank account you give them permision to do credit checks during the term of the account being open this is for checking risks throughout your relationshiop with the bank.

But, currently, HSBC provide the cheapest international money transfer and quite good exchanging ratio. They only charge 15 pounds for normal transfer to other country outside EU.
