HTC Desire has HUGE flaw.

When does a phone purporting to be a multi touch phone, not do true multi touch? Sadly, when its a HTC Desire.

What HTC would hate you to know about, is that both the Legend and the Desire use a Synaptics touch screen sensor which is NOT designed for multi touch at all !

The coming HTC Incredible and EVO have a different sensor that is. This can only be down to some sort of penny pinching excersise by HTC, no engener worth there salt could engage in such a dreadful recommendation. Considering this is the phones main feature and input device, this is simply unacceptable behaviour from HTC.

Bottom line is that the Synaptics touch screen sensor does not track multiple finger input correctly, althogh HTC suggest that "an ability to detect touching of the screen in more than one place at the same time provides a multi touch experience". Having used the Desire myself I can concur, it is indeed very poor when compared to the iPhone or Palm Pre in this regard.

What should have been a fantastic escape from Apple's our way or the highway business ethics or Palm's limited reach, offers a fatally flawed user experience.

Check the video demonstration here; (desire and nexus-one both have same Synaptics sensor.)

This is the new sensor that they should have had...

HTC Desire was never a multi-touch phone anyway... only was advertised with pinch to zoom capabilities which is a lot different to multi touch.

I can understand your confusion. The term is often used interchangeably, however the correct definition is that "Pinch to zoom" IS A "multi touch gesture". Multi touch is any device that recognises multiple contact points simultaneously. The Desire does this with its capacitive touch screen - just very poorly indeed.

So in so much that this was supposed to be an iphone killer, is it now attempted murder?

but can you phone people with this device....
