It's usually a quick job to change cam belt. And really not that hard. …It's usually a quick job to change cam belt. And really not that hard. The key to a good mechanic is that they will check the flywheel timing while they are at the job.

Don’t really agree tbh. It’s not a job you want to rush, you need specialist equipment to lock the cams off. Without you risk misalignment which could have far reaching consequences.
Unless you car is donkeys old any timing adjustment is taken care off by ecu and shouldn’t need mechanic intervention, unless there has been performance issue reports eg knocking
How does the flywheel relate to timing?

Have you done yours then ?
I have a Kia picanto I was under the impression they have timing chains and not belt.
Mines a 2013 plate.
My old Astra had its cambelt changed by a friend (vaux mechanic). Start to finish took him under an hour at his home including changing water pump and all tensioners etc....

According to Vauxhall main dealer it's a 3 hour job so therefore £££ to do. I wouldn't change one myself but if dealers actually charged a fair price then I'd take into them but just taking the Micky for a regular straightforward job for a mechanic.
Cambelts are a really easy, you can’t get them wrong!!

Should all be chains anyway.

agree with everything other than the 'timing adjustment is taken car off by ecu..' etc

not all cars have VVT (or equivalent) so in those cases only the spark advance can be changed by the ECU which does nothing for a mechanical timing issue

The first time you tied your own shoe laces, how long did it take? How long does it take now?

The dealers mechanics probably do several of them a month. They charge the book labour time. Just suppose they quote an hour but due to seized bolts it takes 3. Would you be delighted to pay the 3 or call them incompetent?

I hate all trades prices and to an extent agree. However we are all happy to fall a rip off for things we don’t do ourselves when we see an expert do it likety split.

Yeah because Drive Chains are cheap and easy top replace too.

The point I was making is a chain should only need replacing if there's a problem with it, opposed to a belt that requires changing at regular intervals.

yes but i think pretty much every manufacturer has had chains in at least 1 engine which wear prematurely or have a common failure so its not foolproof
It's not as easy as you think. 1 tooth out would cause you loads of head scratching.

If you do it then turn the engine with a spanner a couple of times and recheck the alignment before you run the engine.
