Phone BG & tell them what you want ie.. quarterly payments & they will change it over for you, there may be a charge?

i used to work for npower and there was no charge for changing from pp meters to credit meters but if weren't with BG previously they may suggest you have it for at least 3 months so they can monitor your payments. If they suggest this tell them you are going to contact your previous supplier and get them to supply your new property. should work

When we moved into our property 9 years ago we had the same problem with the previous owners' pre-paymeter. British Gas for the gas meter and Swalec for the electricity, and even one for the water meter. I just phoned them all explaining that we didn't want them because we wanted to pay via direct debit. They each came and removed them within a few days of each other and we weren't charged a penny. I hope that it's still the case and that you manage to get it sorted .

im with scottish power they wont remove it for free talk about loyalty they also said there will be a charge of 120 pounds with bg

yes tell them to swop the meters and offer to set up the direct debit there and then.. if they refuse, like lynds says, tell them you'll switch suppliers then

don't forget quidco if you do swop (swop online first, then maybe get them to change meters?)

i would keep them i have had nothing but hassle from scottish power with constant arguments even though i have kept dates/readings they still continue to bill me for usage that i have already paid for its a nightmare! i just phoned on the 20/02 with a reading my outstanding amount owed was 35.10 so i paid it then i phoned up yesterday to rearrange my direct debit seen as my account was sitting at zero and when i gave the meter reading she said i owed 164.02! i nearly dropped she says i didnt pay for usage from 27/01 even though i have proof i called on the 20/02! thats only my gas i did have the same problem with my electric until i got it changed to prepayment and i am paying what i told them i would probably use for a months supply! i got a letter of apology and a pathetic 20 quid cheque! (my box is too small for the gas meter otherwise i would have one).

I didn't think you could have the water meter removed once it had been fitted, maybe supplied dependant or I've got my facts wrong?

ouch, have you got a partner they could check instead. Anything you know about that could have affected your credit? Maybe you should get a credit report from those two agencies.

I don't know what on earth it was. It was some kind of digital device that was attatched to the supply via the stopcock, and you had to swipe a pre-payment card through it. If you didn't pay it would gradually shut the supply off. I had a toddler at the time and was pregnant with my 2nd and also hubby was working away at the time. I phoned and explained that not only was it not practical, but that I had always paid by direct debit, and they came and removed it the next day.

Sounds like you had one of these types, they are prepayment water meters, i have a normal type of water meter which is outside in the street under the pavement (obviously undera tiny drain cover)

As for electric - im with Npower and have had nothing but trouble since moving in here, currently have CAB solicitor sorting out a payment which Npower say I owe from 2006 - I didnt live here until 2007 but Npower still say I owe it - they have had a copy of my tenancy to prove when I moved in and they still wont back down. Thank heaven for CAB

Ah right as stated below was a pre-payment water meter, which would tally with me thinking you can't have standard water meter's removed.

glad you got it sorted.... just make sure that they make a note of it on the account so not to cause confusion to the advisor when you call to make appointment for it to be removed.... tho if there is any dispute, they can always listen to the recording of the call you made for the request as proof

If your going to take up the NPOWER offer of free removal do yourself a favour - get a camera the day they remove the meter and take as many photos of the meter reading as possible (take photos of the van, the person doing it and make sure they are date stamped. If your wondering why its linked to my previous post -

    I moved home September 3rd 2007
New home had Npower Pre-Payment meter, had it removed on the grounds - im disabled and cant get out easily to get top ups. To get me started between the moving in day & the day they removed it they came out and gave me a top up card and read the meter, so they knew what electric i was using. This card was pre-paid so anything I used was being paid for.
Npower came and removed the meter on 5th November (even told me there ws still £7 credit on my pre-pay card) installed me a lovely new normal meter and made sure it was zero, i now pay monthly online which suits me.

But ...then they issued me with a bill backdated until 2006 - the day the meter was taken out as apparantly it had been on the wrong tarrif (their mistake they agree). I agree that if the tarrif was wrong I might owe a little from date of moving in until day it was removed (sept 3rd - nov 5) BUT - NPOWER now say i moved in the year before ...and its my bill.

Have sent them copies of my contract with them stating the date/year i moved in and have sent them my tenancy which is dated. They still wont back down, this has been going on months, so CAB (Citizens Advice Solicitor) is now dealing with it and Im also considering contacting BBC Watchdog

In my opinion - steer very clear of NPOWER
