I cant watch dvds anymore

Found 4th Jun 2008
Ok when i had my old 28inch widescreen
wholesalepages.co.uk/dir…jpg

Dvds look fine they look great and could watch them with ease

Then i got ym hdtv and now everytime i watch a film on dvd it looks rubbish you can see everything wrong with the picture all its faults and the it can be unbearable to watch
I even bought a £50 upscaler but that only is a marginal difference and on certain films

So im finding myself buying hd films just so i can watch them with decent quality

So can anyone suggest anything to get ym dvds to look like they did when i watched them on my old tv apart from a 1k upscaler -- running it 760p through hdmi
This is the upscaler i have

She's trying to make a fool of you Daniel!

I'll offer you a tenor! Or at very least the corpse of one.

You need a bigger room.
3ft is too close to any tv never mind HD.
That said I can stand 2-3ft from my 42" screen and the picture is perfect. Upscaled dvd's are immaculate so I suspect you need to adjust your settings.

Well either take my offer of £6.50 or come to terms with the fact that you made a mistake and bought a tv that is way too big for your room! Either way, stop moaning!!!

You should be sitting ATLEAST 7foot away from a 37" HDTV

yeh something wrong your end, upscaled dvds from my ps3 look almost as good as bluray movies, even better than some bluray actually.

correct 7 feet for 720P sources, 10 feet for watching stv and 5 feet for full hd 1080P.

Panasonic DVD-S97 dvd player, with Faroudja processing...........the best upsampled imaged u can get at an affordable price.

DVDs have plenty of detail, and I use dvds on a 100" CRT projected screen, and the image quality is far far superior to HD on any HD flat screen...........

Mind you, the projector is £ 12,000 worth of hardware, but it goes to show, price aside, CRT technology has yet to be beaten.........

same goes for TVs.............not yet seen any LCD or PLASMA that comes close to CRT image quality............ LCDs especially look 2D with horrible lack of true blacks which ruins the image.............plus all the motion artefacts etc

so, the problem is HD needs HD signal input, JUST to look acceptable

rest assured (!) that HD transmissions will be HD in resolution, but will be COMPRESSED, so the image will be average at best.................

Realistically, everyone would have been far better off sticking to CRT TVs and watching standard SD signals............. SD on CRT is still far superior to HD on HD flat screens............

just compare the 2 to see.............

you are correct sir, shame they did not persue the crt hd screens more, im waiting for sed/oled they promise crt quality in hd and thin screens, big companys moved to lcd/plasma for one thing only, and that was to save on maufactoring costs and storage etc and they thought we would all buy and move onto new screens because they thought we would think new tecknology must be better, and like the sheep we all are we did, except me acourse i know better ;-)

Maybe people think a 50" CRT would be too expensive to buy and run and dont want half the room filled with the sets footprint?

God only knows how some people think an SD CRT has a superior image to an HD signal on an HD set. But he does move in mysterious ways!

yes, shame HD CRTs werent pursued...........

as the size of a CRT, well, the corner is usually the best place to put a telly, for the widest viewing angles, so its not a problem, besides, 95% of homes dont have rooms big enuff for 37" screens , let alone 50"...

HD does have more resolution over SD , but the flat TVs just have a horrible completely unrealistic image quality to them, LCDs for example, make everything look 'cartoonised' , and make true black look grey............this alone, completely ruins the quality of the image

if someone made a d-SLR camera, that made blacks look grey, it would be laughed out of town, but for some reason, people accept it on LCD TVs, just because they are flat .....

agree OLED must be the future..........promises true black, with , AND THEY QUOTE " CRT quality images but in HD "

so if the manufactures are still promising CRT quality on flat screens, u can rest assured that current screens are far from reaching that quality............

I would never own a LCD or PLASMA TV.

Id choose Quality over Quantity, any day of the week......besides, I really dont give a hoot what tv the neighbours have, or what car they drive, etc etc...........

There are some people that do hehe
I love HD on my Samsung LCD, I made the switch to LCD last year and haven't regretted it at all, my old 32" Sony cant even come close to my new tele, crt is dead.

Well thanks for informing me where I should be positioning my TV and letting me know that the 29' x 17' room it sits in is too small. One thing is for sure. Whatever room size, the largest set size would be considerably less if chosing a CRT.

Have CRTs got the ability to project black light? Personally, i dont like LCDs either, but my Plasma doesn't suffer this "cartoonised" image you complain of. And the deep blacks do not look grey either.

Are you talking about monitors here when you refer to CRT? I certainly wont argue that my ancient and trusty Sony 17SE2 17" CRT monitor out performs current LCD monitors. But then we are talking about TV sets!

I would never own a LCD or PLASMA TV.

Fair enough. I would never go back to a CRT TV.

I haven't a clue what my neighbours have for their TV sets, but I'm surpised you are trying to turn this into a "keeping up with the Jonse's". I'm more than happy with the quality of my Panasonic Plasma and at the end of the day, thats the only consideration I'm interested in! If I thought CRT was better, I would have bought one. Fact is, I don't.

You should have got a plasma instead of LCD
Though LCD is better for gaming.

And sorry..but if DVDs are not good enough quality, then how are you coping with watching SKY or freeview

And I have the same DVD "upscaler". Lots of people raved about it..but personally I think its all marketing BS. Upscaling does more damage than good on a few of my DVDs

Surely everybody can see the TV just as easily if its in the middle of the room? The beauty of a flat screen is that you dont have to stick it in a corner and then have your room arranged purely for TV watching..like you do with a CRT.
Also, why on earth are you saying that 95% of homes dont have rooms big enuff for 37" screens? That is the worst exaggeration that I have heard on hotuk in quite a while :whistling:

I dont like LCD, but I like plasma.

I had a PictureFrame 3 Toshiba CRT, and that was beautiful. Wouldnt trade my 50" Plasma back in for it though.

Apparently most upscalers don't upscale copied DVDs, no matter how good the copy is. I'm not certain so don't quote me on that.

Your thread says "cant watch dvds anymore", yet you say you can watch freeview, which you say is worse?
I on the other hand..had HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, but then found DVD perfectly acceptable on my 2 Plasmas, and my HD projector, so I went back to basics.
Seriously, try turning off upscaling on your DVD player and see what difference it makes. If you have poor quality DVDs (such as old TV shows) then that upscaler makes a real mess of them.
