The pope visit; why all the crying. yes its costing the taxpayers 10mil but its NOT that much really per actual tax payer. its a Christian country and is good for the Catholics of this country.

Yes there is all the naughty stuff they tried to cover, but they are trying to make amends and all. give them a chance i say and embrace a visit from a religious leader. It's a peaceful visit

10 million could go to the homeless, NHS etc..

I know what I would prefer.

I don't like homeless people, would prefer the pope had it.

Why?

i agree with magicbeans we have spent money on some useless things in the past and still do i myself am not a catholic but i agree people should enjoy the visit and forget the past as thats where bigotry and hate should be as it makes the world a very bad place and we are not on the planet for that long really so why consume it with negativity.

I'm hoping to pick up the Popemobile cheap when he's finished with it so i can fit curtains and a toilet in it for those long journeys on the motorway.

Why can't the church pay for it instead of the taxpayer as it's only churchgoers who want him here.

some authorities wont give patients cancer drugs because they are too expensive people have to save up and beg for charity to send kids abroad for treatment i could go on and on!! why doesnt this country get its priorities right

see every cloud has a silver lining!

£10 million pays for a lot of shizzle, it may have even got a few people working on security who've been out of work a while, they then pay tax and spend it in tescos, ultimatly it's aiding economic growth.

I agree.
One thing I don't get though is he is visiting Scotlandx2, Londonx2 and Birmingham. Theres a hell of a lot of Catholics in the North West, especially Liverpool, but he's not going anywhere near there????? What a shame.

see its swings and roundabouts about who should pay for what i am a taxpayer and there are things i am not happy about paying like say certain other visitors as i dont agree with it but let it go its a one off

He can come here if he wants, 10 mill is a drop in the ocean. It;s offensive that people have to pay again to see him....should be free. The Vatican have money to burn ffs

A complete and utter waste of money, considering the amount of people that have to pay for it who are not tied to a religion.

Well i'm pee'd off with it all. For me to get to work this Sunday, i only have about a 6 mile detour and that is at 5am. My 'public' park has now been closed for almost 2 weeks.

He's only 1 man so visiting everybody in the country is going to be a little difficult. He's not even visiting Ireland where its mainly catholic.

As for the money spent, a lot of that will be recooped by extra spending by people going to see him etc

Tricky one really but it is classed as a state visit so for example if the President of America came the tax payer would fund that and I guess we would have protests as well as we do now.

I do understand others thoughts about the cost though.

MM makes a good point, its good for econominc growth as well as spreading peace and all. im not catholic and wont be attending the functions, but do welcome the visit. nice to see people getting together to spread love and peace. its a feel good thing for Catholics.

i do find it disrpesctful, there are some billboards from the Humanist Society in Scotland saying something like 2million of us dont need Catholicism or something. i mean whats the need for the negativity. i watched the programme last night on BBC4 (im posh like that!) about the vatican and although my religious views are different i liked th fact that it was all about peace and joining in to appreciate something of good.

Put him in select venues and then charge people to go and see him and it pays for itself. Why should the "taxpayer" pay for something that is of no benefit to them.

There would be uproar if the taxpayer had to fund something that only appealed to a relatively small percentage of the country outside of religion.

Duh.....people are being charged to see him lol

Where the cash goes from ticket sales nobody knows as it certainly won;t hit the public coffers,

The taxpayer has to fund all the benefit scroungers. I wouldn't say that was very appealing either!

The campaigners said that Pope Benedict was welcome to travel to Britain but he 'should not be given the honour of a state visit to this country'.

They cited a litany of reasons to oppose the trip, including: the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to contraception; its loathing of abortion; its resistance to gay rights; and its slowness to deal with cases of child abuse by priests and bishops

their views might differ from the average joe's but they have the RIGHT to think that way, as do u.

they are making an effort to deal with child abuse cases now as pope is meeting the victims and all. so they are addressing that issue....gotta respect that,

Maybe they are worried they'll produce more fat people. oO

there are loads of people fleecing the tax payer daily and one that annoys me are people who deliberately choose not to work and continue to have children and fleece from all us taxpayers daily and i am going on the area i work in and have daily contact or knowledge of these people.
added= and they appear to know and enjoy the fact that they know how to as they call it "work the system"

Possibly.

It might be easier to close all KFC's in Bury

It would probably be cheaper to pay for each person who wants to see him, to fly them to the Vatican.

Theres only one, next door to matalan, which is funnily enough the clothes shop of choice for fat people (well the ones that cant afford to go to evans)

Well,I hope that every one who goes has a great day,mrs barky is going(I have no religion),but the reason people are upset is that unlike the last time which was a pastoral visit,we are paying all this money because the pope is invited as a head of state.

When barack obama is invited here,we pay the security expenses etc,and when David cameron visits abroad they pay-this is protocol. HOWEVER barack obama doesnt hold open air meetings in parks that need policed, motorways shut down etc-they are NOT the same thing.

The Vatican is not a country in any sense of the word, its utterly ridiculous imho-so my opinion is not based on any bigotry at all-if it was a pastoral visit like The last pope, then fine and dandy.

In scotland they have been charging between 20-40 quid a ticket btw,and as for trying to make amends for the wrongdoings in the past, this pope has strengthened the churces position on gay people,is responsible for endless misery in the third world with his stance on contraception. The vatican bank has billions in assets, much of it raised from their investment in armaments companies and unethical drug companies.

So,let him come, let the people who want to go enjoy their day,and I hope they have a good one,but I have serious moral objections to many things this man stands for.

huh...did not know about that stuff u mentioned at the end!!

i mean the open air stuff isnt an issue for me...its been 28 yrs since the last visit, so its not exactly a STRAIN on the country if its gotta mke the effort once every 28 years!

I wonder how many deaths from Aids the catholic church is responsible for
with their stand on contaception,,,,sameful,,
