    I hate computers! Help?

When I say problem more of a thinker?

When my Dell Optiplex 320 arrived it had 512 installed so to give it a little more grunt I bought a gig from Crucial, installed it and all was well til I checked and for some reason its only using the gig where the other 512 has gone I don't know? Had a ganda in the bios and its there but not being used?

    Any idea's?

    Oh **** it! :x

Just goes to show how far behind the times I am. Its typical that PC company's ruin what was a good idea being able to mix memory modules.... ********s! :x

    i'm sure its ok to have a 128 and a 256 or a 256 and a 512 etc etc

    did u scan with crucial?
    is it fitted correctly?

Swap the two memory modules around and let us know what happens, if you only see the 512 then it's a pairing problem and it's using the one in the 1st bank it scans. Otherwise let us know what it does and someone will figure it out

    Thanks chaps..

This is the situation..... the system came with 512MB, bought 1GIG from Crucial using the system scanner and everything was dandy. Installed the GIG on its own and it works fine, installed the 512 on its own and that works fine, install both of them in either slot and its only the gig that works. Checked the BIOS and it shows 1GIG/512 installed but only using the GIG.... :whistling:

Contacted Dell :w00t: their answer is something like Eh, huh... me no understand :giggle:

    God dam computers!!!!

Motherboard probably only supports up to 1Gb then, that's the only thing that I can think of...

Download ]CPU-Z, run it in Windows and post what it says about your memory and motherboard.

Don`t think you can run two different sizes. You can run 2x128, or 2x512,or 2x1gb but no other combination will work due to the architecture of the ram unit

make sure that the 1gig is situated in slot 1, normally the one closest to the cpu, make sure that the memory is running @ the same speed as each other and also that they have similar latency settings

Don't know if its specific to the motherboard but I used to run my PC on 384mb fine.

Yeah, not sure what the problem is Iom-RF

Could do the same in my old HP without a problem!!!

Hmm, nothing obvious there - Although it does say you can only have 2GB, unlike what Crucial were saying.

It could be that the motherboard doesn't like the different sizes or manufacturers (some can be fussy like that), the only way to know for sure would be if you have a mate that can lend you another 512Mb or 1Gb to test.

    Have you updated the bios?

I doubt it would need doing for RAM, It normally needs doing for bigger harddrives but it could be a problem.

    Thanks chaps!

Just got a mail from Dell saying this machine will only use identical memory in both slots and wont with the type of memory setup I have.... In short, chuck the 512 and buy another GIG :? :x

    Sell the 512mb?

    What speed is it?

Prebuilt pcs have a memory lock in it that only allow 128+128 256+256 and so on. I built my own pc and at the moment i have 256+512.

I'm guessing its a lock in the bios of prebuilts
