I have an idea that might make millions...but...

So I have this idea (which I cannot disclose), I have sent it to a company named Davison.com (which I found via Google). They called me today (from the USA) and seem really keen on my possible invention. They seem to think it would be worth pursuing but they require a payment from me to do the checks on patents etc. This payment is for $559... I'm now stuck in a dilemma as the wife thinks it's just a scam to get money off me but im pretty sure my idea would be a success.
I know nothing about this company although their website looks pretty good so I'm a bit reluctant to hand over the money...so my friends I need some friendly advice....what should I do?

if you tell me I will suggest something seriously! (pm if need be!) :whistling:

Don't pay anything to anyone yet!

Get yourself on the Den of Dragons

scam! if it really could make millions they wouldnt need money up front-they will tell EVERYONE who contacts them their idea is great(not saying yours isnt btw) but this is a total ripoff.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Have you got their number to call them back and see how legit they are? I'd definitely do some more background work on the company before I was handing over that kind of money. And I'd also have some sort of contract from them confirming your cut in profits etc.

Why on earth are you dealing with a US company? Surely even if you do go down that route a UK company would make far more sense.

If you're sure it is a genuine new idea, you should contact the patent office and get their advice. Or call a patent agent and talk to them on how to proceed. Forget Dragons Den and the like as you need it up and running before they are interested.

Seriously though what kind of idea is it ?. is it electronic or something that requires a specialist company to build or something simple but just a new idea ,

i have a patent on a product and as I've been through the process I'll share my views.
If you you want to apply for a patent do not share your invention with anyone apart from a patent attorney, you need about £300 in the UK to apply however to truly protect your product you need alot more money.
anyone can apply for a patent but you may leave your description/invention open to loop holes or ways around your product.

If you patent a product someone will simply make it a different way and call it a different name with different features. what you need to do is patent either the concept or the working designs. to do this you will need a patent attorney to write out the proposal for the patent after the patent is submitted it's then the attorneys job to fight any objections on your patent in relation to any previous patents that may contravene your patent application.
Mine took just under 3 years to be granted and 12k.

If you do not have that kind of money then you do need someone to partner with. Make sure if you need to approach someone else to partner with go to any regular solicitor and pay about £300 for a confidentiality agreement and present it the people you talk to and get it signed before you reveal you invention.

The people i used for the patent are ]loven & Co in Lincoln.
    They really were excellent.

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than invest in this... IM OUT!

They could take over the patent application by demanding more money to go forward or call it quits then they get all of it and the $599

Yes it is selling now and it is being made best practice in many big companies. It took 3 years to develop correctly though.

It wasn't me who invented it, it was my dad. but i helped :whistling:

The product is a drip tray that allows free passage of water, but contains oil that is spilt on it.
Normal drip trays fill up with water and overspill leaving a fine of 20K by the Environmental Agency plus the cost of clean up plus the removal of contaminated waste.
Ours you have none of those costs

By the way the products is ]here

Why can't you build it OP?

Perhaps but if is it worth it then they would have the OP by the nuts

Hand over the money, then learn from your mistake.

Seriously the best thing to do is test out this company by sending them an idea which is clrearly not going to work and see if they send the same reply asking for money and saying it is a great idea, That way you will know if it is just the standard spiel,

You should contact Trevor Baylis, who invented amongst other things the wind up radio.
I met him at the NEC he was very helpful and started by satying , "please dont tell me what your idea is"

    1. You shouldn't have told them as it makes getting a patent very difficult.
    2. Don't hand over the cash
    3. You found them on the internet? Oh come on -.-

whats your net profit forecast for year 1? and then in year 2?
