Using wired or wireless? Also are you using Internet at the same time?

Don't know if I can get a better router to use with sky fibre

depends on what you mean by slow. A switch will speed it up a little over ethernet. wifi ac will give you faster wifi but you might need a new wifi card and extra aerial.

I've got a WD my cloud and the file transfer rate is slow even using home plugs

any router will work with it. you just use the sky router as a modem. plug the sky ethernet into the wan socket on the new router and set that as your dhcp and firewall.
