I haven't a clue about laptop specs, is this a good deal, please?

On Currys website, link below - £399, I think it was £449 instore.

All I know is that I want a big screen, DVD writer and wifi so would really appreciate some advice.

    Thank you

Overall this has pretty god specs. 3Gb of memory, 250Gb hard drive, Vista Home Premium, 17" screen (17" laptops tend to be more expensive than 15" laptops).

The BEST type of Intel CPUs to get are the "Core 2 Duo".

This has a "Pentium Dual Core Processor " which will be fine for general office work, but are not up to the power of the Core 2 Duo.

So assuming you just want it for general office work (internet, email etc) then this will be fine.

If you want one with more "grunt" go for a Core 2 Duo.

    Thanks for the advice

So would a core2duo one be better for downloading things, or for like doing several different things at once (like burning a DVD whilst surfing the net)?

The second one has a better CPU, but it is £50 more.

For downloading things it is almost totally dependant on your broadband speed and the power of your CPU has little effect on it.

A better/faster CPU will help with doing a number of different things at once, as does having a decent amount of memory.

3Gb of memory is fine. Going up to 4Gb gains you very little.

If your after a smaller screen at 15.6" (making it more portable) when a good deal to go for would be ebuyer.com/pro…845

I think I am going to contradict myself here.

After doing some more research it seems the Pentium Dual Core T3400 is a "faster" CPU than the Core 2 Duo T5800.

There is not much in it, but it scores better on this site.

Thanks again, so is the Currys one worth getting, then?

Thank you for the suggestion, but definitely don't want a smaller screen - the furthest the laptop moves is from my desk in the kitchen to the sofa in the living room! :w00t:

Yes and no - it's like saying will a Ferrari get to the shops quicker than a Fiesta - yes, but you'd be mad to spend the money on something so mundane as the difference is barely noticable for what your doing.

For what your doing i'd recommend this - ebuyer.com/pro…887

The CPU is slower than a Pentium / Core 2, but the extra memory should make up for that for general use. You also get Bluetooth, better battery, dedicated graphics card etc

Thank you, but I really do want a 17" screen. I haven't a clue about specs and really only use the laptop for the internet, word documents, Frontpage, downloading, burning DVD's so if the Curry's one will do that nicely then I am happy, but is it a good deal?

Does not matter if it is a good deal or not, it is out of stock if you look on the web site.

I know, I just posted a thread in the 'deal request' section for a similar laptop - I am sure that was the model I just saw instore though, will have to go in and check
