I need advice on buying a car for the 1st time in 10 years.

Found 16th Feb 2007
Hi

Looks like the company car wil have to go back at the end of the month. I've not had to buy a car for ten years or so and a lot of things have change since then.

Is it save to buy from a private seller (ebay) or will I be better of to buy from a dealer ?

What checks do I need to find out if its stolen or if there are any outstanding payments owing on the car ?

Please tell me about change of ownership, or is that just when selling a car.

TIA.

I can help as I work as an Accountant at a Major Motor dealership.

Where to buy? This will depend on how much you have to spend, how you intend to finance your purchase, how old/new you want the car to be.

If you buy from a major dealer they car out all the checks to make sure it isn't stolen, has outstanding finance etc. Beware - although you can do these checks online some of the companies have disclaimers that state if later it's found to have outstanding finance etc then they are not liable. These checks are great but not always 100% acurate - particulary if the car has been imported. At least with a dealer you can go back to them and they would have to sort it.

You can Pm me if you want with details and I'll give you tips for haggling etc - depending on what type of car/sale you want.

To check for outstanding payments you can use HPI or experian. I would personally recommend HPI though as Experian have messed up their data lately. (around 40% of checks coming back wrong and if they send you the wrong info it will be a pain in the ass for you). This will also show you the registered keeper of the car so you'll know if its stolen, been in any accidents, how long they have owned it ect ect

It is safe to buy from a private seller but know what your looking for or have an expert you trust look it over for you. There are car auctions happening around the country all the time so you could go to them as well as ebay.

If your taking out a loan to pay for said car take it against the car and not yourself. That way for example if you buy from a dealership and decide half way through your agreement you can give the car back and write off the rest of the payments. Also if you buy from a dealer, you will be informed when the best time for you to trade in and get the exact same deal on a better car is without you putting any extra money in (if i'm working there that is, as thats my job hehe) Also if you buy from a dealership all the checks about outstanding finance on the car are on their heads and they get the headache if anything goes wrong.

Good point never pay ticket price, there is ALWAYS room for discount ;-) . The annoying thing at dealerships is how sales people have to keep going back and forward to the manager. If you can talk directly to him/her thats what we do.
