Not in the mental sense.

I'm planning a 2/3 week express travel trip to America at the end of April. We're flying to LA and want to hire a car and see as much of the surrounding area as possible. We have a list of obvious places we want to try to get to, ie. Las Vegas, San Francisco, Grand Canyon etc. It will basically turn into one massive Road Trip.

Can anyone make any other suggestions of places around that area that are must-see or anything that we should be doing?

Does anyone have any tips on car hire/hotels? Has anyone done similiar in the same area that can help me figure out how we're going to do this?! And any idea of costs would be good as well.

Thanks.

Car Hire from the airport

Check out alberquerque its a beautiful forgotten part of the US. You could even venture as far as New Orleans and have a journey along the Old Miss (Mississippi).

P.S. you sure not in the mental sense

Sloth/Mod

Make sure you get CDW (Collision damage waiver) cover else you could end up with quite a bill as insurance in the US is very different.

Dnt spend too much time in Vegas, its novelty wears of pretty quick.
hated LA aswell, i found it quite a scary place, felt very unsafe there Stayed out in Santa Monica instead which is SO Nice

I did this trip not summer just gone but one before it during my 8 weeks in the states.

We drove from Sandiego up to Sanfransisco over 6 days.

I reccomend you start in Sandiego, take a day trip to Tiauhana, Mexico just because, do the zoo and check out the Dueling piano bar in the Gaslamp district (cant remember its name) Drive Highway 1 its so beautiful.

On the way stop of at Heast Castle, its pretty epic, Do the beaches along the way AND DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY Drive pretty much due east of San fransisco to Yosemitie national park, i firmly beleave it is the most beautiful place on earth.

There is loads to do in San fransisco, so budget atleast 5 days there

Is car hire cheapest from the airport?
How far is Alberquerque from LA? Ditto New Orleans...and in which direction?

We went with budget when we were there, Pre booked through a company over here, think it cost us £165 for 7 days with a tank of fuel and picking up in San Diego, dropping off in San Fran. Bargain.

MoMA
Alcatraz (NIGHT TOUR, again cant emphisise this enough.. book it early)
Cycle across the golden gate bride to sausolito
Shopping
Cable Car
Lots of good food and drinking places.

You could even go a little further north into the wime country and do a wine tasting day.. that was pretty amazing.

When i went out there i ended up playing a game of cricket (proper game as well) randomly for a local team which was one of the best days of my life so far but thats another story :P

Its pretty much a muchness. The cost is around the same whereever you go, but keep in mind it will still be way cheaper than what you would pay in the UK

LA to New Orleans is 1900 miles, this would be a good 3-4 day drive. But on the way you pass through Arizona (Grand Canyon), New Mexico (alberquerque), Texas (Dallas and Austin) and Louisiana (New Orleans), so plenty to see on the way. Oh if you head towards Vegas on the way to the Grand Canyon that should pretty much fill your week

+1 really check out the insurance, and know and understand what you are paying for and covered for, they use this to really bump the price up

I'm not sure we''ll be going that far inland to be honest, but thanks for the ideas!

me and my oh spent august - october in the states drove all the way around in an anti clockwise direction, just over 10500miles all in all

www.uscarhire.co.uk was by far the cheapest for us, so its worth a look at them.

if your going to vegas take a trip to the hoover dam, you can pay to go in the turbines etc, but its pretty cool to just park in the free car park pull ins at the side and take some snaps etc, also lake mead is a beautiful place (thats what the hoover dam is holding back)

have you decided on where your stayin etc?

LA is a pretty naff place if im completely honest, do the hollywood walk of fame and that area and whatever you want in the way of attractions etc .... dont venture too far away on foot, its a scary place away from the main tourist area.

ditto santa monica, its gorgeous, we stayed a couple days with my cousin on her house boat in marina del ray - brill place where they are always filming something for a film/tv.
Venice beach etc is a quirky place to visit, very alternate... homeless + hippies etc and lots of cannabis if thats your thing (they have 'medical' bars where its legal etc

obviously there is disney/orlando etc in LA if thats up your street

deffo do yosemite , again an awesome place grand canyon is a definate place to go!!

PCH1 (pacific coast highway 1) is a gorgeous drive, take a couple days from san fran to LA and stop at a couple of beaches etc!

next to vegas is Death Valley, crazy place to visit if you have the time, its the lowest place in northern america and holds the record for the highest temp ever in the western hemisphere.... there isnt alot there, but its a cool drive with some nice scenery and salt flats etc..

if your off to san fran, make sure you go to alcatraz, book your tickets online tho, they tend to be sold out if you dont get there very early...

phoenix is an awesome place to see, altho there isnt a great deal around and would be quite away from vegas / LA, albuqueque is alright, we was gutted we missed the balloons (about all it has going.lol)

trying to to think of some other places, it all really depends on what sort of things you like doing/seeing - if you like just scenery/sights history and all that or if its touristy attractions etc??

san diego as cool, deffo go to the zoo!!! not sure if they still do the late nights, but when we went it was open late to see the animals in the dark etc...
have a pop to mexico, we went to Juarez (mexico, very scary - car insurance isnt valid, but atleast can say we did it and survivied)

hope this helps, any questions just asked, we went to alot of places - across to washington/new york - niagara etc and so we got a good idea of whats cool to see, thats not to say we saw it all tho, would need years.lol

angelfairee;7437860

Thank youuuuuuuu!

Not a problem, there are loads of little places if you are driving highway one, theres th 18 mile drive i think its called around spyglass hill golf course.

if you do drive highway one, which you almost certainly will you will be stopping every 10 minutes anyway for that perfect picture, which is even better than the last one. Trust me :P

Theres an awesome Barbeque place in San Louis Obispo aswell which is on the way :P

Thank you so much!

Wee tip on car insurance.

As Syzable mentioned, you will need CDW. Buy it in this country and save yourself a fortune - I used the guys below, and we save a lot of what they charge you stateside.

Thank you so much!

no probs, any questions please ask, its so hard remembering everything.lol think i covered the main tho in a rambled sort of post...lol

oh yea as mentioned earlier dont spend too much time in vegas, its cool to see dont get me wrong (we went twice for a couple nights each time as it was my birthday on the first visit) but it can be very 'same-y' there is alot to do tho aslong as you dont spend all day in bed recovering from the night before.lol
you wanna take a look at the freemont experience area aswell, thats like the original vegas and a bit more like you would imagine from the tele, rather neglected and 'scuzzy' if that word is used around your area, very busy tho and the shows on the roof screen outside are a brill sight!

Are you volunteering?!

Anyone...will I be able to do this:

LA to San Diego to Tijuana to Las Vegas to Grand Canyon to Death Valley to Yosemite to San Francisco to LA

...in 2 weeks?!

Another question: am I going to die driving around America?!

Driving in the States is a piece of p really. You soon get the hang of driving on the wrong side of the car. San Francisco to LA coastal drive is excellent - we did this and stopped in Monterey and Santa Barbara on the way down.

I was only looking at doing this earlier tonight
gonna be going next month
after the missus decided on not doing the diarroeah guatamala trip

Son did 3 weeks in Texas and Arizona recently and a road trip to Ohio (!). Said Phoenix and most of Arizona was best part of USA. Car hire through EasyCar via Quidco gave us excellent rates last year and generous cashback plus pick up and return at airport. When you go online to book say you live in USA or Canada instead of UK and the rates are much better! More rip-off Britain I'm afraid!

I didn't think of Quidco, thanks for that!

We have done this several times and I worked for BA inspecting the hotels throughout North America.

I do have plenty of knowledge and would be happy to price and recommend hotels to you.

If you pm me your dates and how flexible you are on these,, how many peeps are travelling, what type of car you want and the cities/places you want to see I will tailor make something for you.

My suggestion would be to fly into LA go down to San Diego ( you can visit Mexico while you are there )
then up to Palm Springs onto Vegas and across to San Fransico via either Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe etc.

LA and San Fran are commom rated so a in and out returns using either airport is the same price. Using Vegas to go in or out of will bump up the price.

Anyways if i can help you with anything just let me know.
