I have been buying the £5-£10 cheap white plastic kettles from asda/argos/tesco with an exposed element and they keep going rusty. Now obviously there cheap as hell so I dont expect miracles its just they keep leaving bit bits of rust in the bottom of the kettle, I've had like 4/5 of these now as I just keep swapping them but I want to upgrade to a nice shiny silver metal one but I'm worried it'll go rusty too. Is this just cos i keep buyin cheap kettles or is it something to do with the lement being exposed or the fact I leave water in it all the time?? Seems a trivial problem I know I just dont wanna waste my money! thankyou! x

Is it rust or limescale?

I'm not 100% but I think its just rust.. clumps of it in the bottom of the kettle and the element has gone all rusty too.

You Probably In Hard Water Area , Next Time You See It Building Up Try Limescale Remover Availiable From Supermarkets . If This Makes It Brand New You Have Your Answer

sounds like limescale happens in every kettle I've had even shiny silver russel hobbs ones... never seen any rust on the elements though, but broken loads of cheap ones. There are more expensive ones then mine mind maybe they never go limescaley, I just make sure its as clean as poss and that the filter is clean too.

lmao!

Move to Scotland, we don't get limescale.

Rust is reddish colour, limescale is white!

Never seen rust in a kettle. Plenty of limescale though.

spend a few quid more on one with a flat plate and enclosed element, if you spend slightly more you will also get a better filter in the spout

it's probably limescale and you can buy tablets to put in kettle to descale it

WD40, stops rust.

I filter my water 'cos I have a glass kettle and it's not rusty at all.

use a water filter for your water, as it sounds like hard water problem

why not spend 40 quid on a decent one instead of constantly buying the cheap junk ones that dont last? false economy or what!

IMO water carrying in stuff from pipes rather than kettle.
